About Je Anilo Prema Dhana

Je Anilo Prema Dhana carries one of the most personal griefs in the entire Gaudiya Vaishnava songbook. Its formal title, Sva-parsada-bhagavad-viraha-janita-vilapa, a lament born of separation from the Lord's own associates, describes exactly what it is. By the time Srila Narottama dasa Thakura composed it, the six Gosvamis of Vrindavana had already departed, and two of his own closest companions, Srinivasa Acarya and Ramacandra Kaviraja, had followed them. Each verse mourns a different one of these predecessor acaryas by name, asking where such great souls have gone. It comes from Narottama's collection Prarthana, itself a book of prayer rather than a formal treatise, and this song sits among its most anguished entries. Tradition holds that Narottama himself passed from this world not long after composing it, at Prema Ghata on the bank of the Ganges at Kheturi, the same spot, it is said, where Caitanya Mahaprabhu himself once sat. Read in that light, this is not a song of abstract theology but of one devotee's own approaching farewell to everyone he loved.
