Maṅgalācaraṇa before Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Class
Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya — Prayers before a Bhāgavatam class
Oṁ. I bow to Bhagavān Vāsudeva, the Supreme Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, son of Vasudeva.
First one should bow to Nārāyaṇa, to Nara, the best of men, to the goddess Sarasvatī and to Vyāsa, and only then recite this work that brings victory.
When one serves the Bhāgavata every day, both the book and the devotee, nearly everything inauspicious in the heart is wiped away, and firm, unwavering devotion grows for the Lord who is praised in the finest verses.
I bow to Mādhava, the supreme bliss, whose mercy makes the mute speak with eloquence and lets the lame leap over mountains.
About Maṅgalācaraṇa before Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Class
Before a Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam class, devotees first chant 'oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya' three times; it is written once here. These are the words with which Śrīla Vyāsadeva opens the Bhāgavatam, just before its first verse. Next come Bhāgavatam 1.2.4, Sūta Gosvāmī's instruction to bow to Nārāyaṇa, Nara, Sarasvatī and Vyāsa before reciting, and 1.2.18, which says that regular service to the Bhāgavatam makes bhakti steady. The last verse, on the Lord's mercy that makes the mute eloquent, is Śrīdhara Svāmī's invocation in his Bhāvārtha-dīpikā commentary.
