About Snāna Mantra

The first verse calls seven sacred rivers by name, the Gaṅgā, Yamunā, Godāvarī, Sarasvatī, Narmadā, Sindhu and Kāverī, and asks them to be present in the water at hand. That is why it serves both at home, to make an ordinary bucket of water holy, and as a Gaṅgā-snāna mantra at the river itself. The second verse makes bathing an act of remembrance: let the bath, the japa, the meditation and the singing all be "Govinda". Both are traditional verses whose source has not been traced.
