Śrī Garuḍa Praṇāma
Śrī-garuḍāya namas tubhyaṁ — Obeisances to Śrī Garuḍa
O Śrī Garuḍa, I bow to you: foe of every king of serpents, carrier of Mahā-Viṣṇu, Tārkṣya, whose brilliance has no measure.
About Śrī Garuḍa Praṇāma
Garuḍa, the great eagle who carries Lord Viṣṇu, is greeted here by four titles: enemy of the serpent kings, carrier of Mahā-Viṣṇu, Tārkṣya (an old name of Garuḍa) and the one of boundless splendour. The verse is a salutation from the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition of South India, where a Garuḍa shrine faces the main Deity in Viṣṇu temples; no scriptural source for it was found. At Purī too a Garuḍa pillar faces Śrī Jagannātha, and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu used to stand behind it to take darśana.
