Śrī Gaura-Nityānanda Vandanā
Ājānu-lambita-bhujau — Prayers to Śrī Gaura and Nityānanda
I bow to the two Lords who are mercy itself come down to this world. Their long arms reach to Their knees, Their skin glows like pure gold and Their eyes are wide as lotus petals. They alone are the fathers of saṅkīrtana. They carry the whole world, They are the finest of brāhmaṇas and the keepers of the dharma of this age, and They do good to everyone in the universe.
I bow to Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya and Nityānanda, who have risen together like the sun and the moon in the eastern sky of Gauḍa. Wonderful and bringing blessings, They drive the darkness away.
About Śrī Gaura-Nityānanda Vandanā
The first verse is the opening blessing of Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata by Śrīla Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākura (Ādi-khaṇḍa 1.1). Every epithet in it is in the dual number, so it praises Śrī Caitanya and Śrī Nityānanda together: two Lords with arms reaching to Their knees, golden complexions and eyes long like lotus petals, the fathers of saṅkīrtana. The second verse is Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi 1.2, where Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī compares the two brothers to the sun and moon rising together over Gauḍa (Bengal) to drive away darkness.
