Lord Jagannātha, You make Your home on Nīlācala, the blue hill of Purī. You are eternal, the Supreme Soul of all beings. To You, and to Balabhadra and Subhadrā who stay beside You, I offer my obeisances.

About Śrī Jagannātha Praṇāma

Nīlācala, “the blue hill”, is the old name for the rise of ground at Purī on which Lord Jagannātha’s temple stands, and this verse opens by naming the Lord as the one who lives there. In four short lines it greets all three Deities who sit together on the temple’s jewelled altar: Jagannātha, His elder brother Balabhadra and His sister Subhadrā. Devotees say it before taking darśana of Jagannātha, at Ratha-yātrā and in daily worship. No scriptural source for the verse has been found; it is known only as a traditional praṇāma.
