Translation

O Mahāmāyā, great power of the Lord, seated on the throne of splendour and worshipped by the gods, obeisances to You. You hold the conch, the disc and the club in Your hands; O Mahālakṣmī, I bow to You.

About Śrī Lakṣmī Devī Praṇāma

This is the first verse of the Mahālakṣmy-aṣṭakam, an eight-verse hymn in which Indra, king of the gods, praises the goddess of fortune. Tradition places the hymn in the Padma Purāṇa, but the exact chapter has not been confirmed. Lakṣmī is pictured here holding the conch, disc and club, the very weapons of Lord Viṣṇu, which marks her as His own consort and energy. Read in that light, the title Mahāmāyā means the Lord’s great divine power, not the illusion that binds souls. The verse is widely recited at Lakṣmī pūjā, above all on Dīpāvalī night.
