Śrutim apare smṛtim itare — Obeisances to Śrī Nanda Mahārāja

Translation

Let some who dread the round of worldly life worship the Vedas, others the smṛtis, and others the Mahābhārata. As for me, I worship Nanda here, for in his courtyard is the Supreme Brahman.

bandhūkāruṇa-vasanaṁ sundara-kūrcaṁ mukunda-hṛta-nayanam nandaṁ tundila-vapuṣaṁ candana-gaura-tviṣaṁ vande
Translation

I worship Nanda, dressed in cloth as red as the bandhūka flower, with a handsome beard and a round, full belly, his complexion fair as sandalwood and his eyes captured by Mukunda.

About Śrī Nanda Mahārāja Praṇāma

In the first verse the poet lets others worship the Vedas, the smṛtis or the Mahābhārata out of fear of the world, and chooses instead to worship Nanda, because the Supreme Brahman is in Nanda's courtyard. Raghupati Upādhyāya recited it before Śrī Caitanya at Prayāga (Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 19.96), and Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī included it in his Padyāvalī (126). The second verse describes Nanda: cloth red as the bandhūka flower, a fine beard, a round belly, a sandalwood-fair complexion and eyes held by Mukunda. Its source is not known.
