Śrī Nṛsiṁha Stuti
Vāg-īśā yasya vadane — Prayers to Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva
The goddess of speech lives in His mouth, Lakṣmī rests upon His chest, and pure awareness dwells within His heart. That Lord Nṛsiṁha I worship.
I bow to Lord Hari, who wears the face of the king of beasts and glows like the autumn moon. He fills Prahlāda’s heart with joy, and He tears apart the ignorance that troubles His devotees.
Fierce as He is, this man-lion is not fierce at all toward His own devotees. He is like a lion who is gentle with its own young but shows its terrible strength to everyone else.
I bow to Nṛsiṁha: fierce and heroic, the great Viṣṇu Himself, blazing, His faces turned in every direction; terrifying and yet all-auspicious, the death even of death.
About Śrī Nṛsiṁha Stuti
Three of these four verses were written by Śrīdhara Svāmī as invocations in his Bhāgavatam commentary, Bhāvārtha-dīpikā: at the start of the First Canto, of Canto 7 chapter 9, where Prahlāda prays to the Lord, and of Canto 10 chapter 87. Caitanya-caritāmṛta quotes the third in Madhya-līlā 8.6, and Śrīla Prabhupāda’s purport to Madhya 8.5 quotes the first two. The fourth is much older: the Nṛsiṁha mantra-rāja of the Nṛsiṁha-tāpanī Upaniṣad, which hails the Lord as “the death of death”. Together they show Nṛsiṁha as terrible to the demons and gentle, like a lion with its cubs, toward His devotees.
