Translation

I bow down to Sākṣi-gopāla, the Lord who cherishes the brāhmaṇas. For a brāhmaṇa’s sake He set out on His own feet in His Deity form and walked to a land a hundred days’ journey away. How wonderful are His deeds!

About Śrī Sākṣi-gopāla Praṇāma

Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī opens the fifth chapter of Caitanya-caritāmṛta’s Madhya-līlā with this verse. An elderly brāhmaṇa of Vidyānagara in South India had promised his daughter to a young brāhmaṇa, before the Gopāla Deity in Vṛndāvana. When the family refused to keep the promise, the young man went back and begged Gopāla to come as witness (sākṣī). The Deity walked behind him all the way, the sound of His ankle bells telling the youth He was there. Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu later told this story to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu when they saw Sākṣi-gopāla at Kaṭaka.
