Śrī Sudarśana Stuti (Ambarīṣa Mahārāja)
Tvam agnir bhagavān sūryas — Mahārāja Ambarīṣa's prayers to the Sudarśana cakra
You are fire, you are the glorious sun, you are the moon, ruler of all the lights of the sky. You are water, earth and space, you are the wind, and you are the objects of the senses and the senses themselves.
O Sudarśana, I bow to you. O thousand-spoked one, dear to Acyuta, destroyer of every weapon, O lord of the earth, be gracious and bring well-being to this brāhmaṇa.
You are dharma, you are the true order of things and truth itself. You are sacrifice and the one who enjoys every sacrifice. You guard the worlds, you are the soul of all, you are the Lord's supreme splendour and strength.
O you with the beautiful hub, to you I say 'namaḥ'. You are the bridge that holds up all dharma and a fiery comet of doom for the demons who live by adharma. You guard the three worlds, your radiance is spotless, you are swift as the mind and wondrous in your deeds.
O lord of speech, your radiance, made of dharma, has destroyed the darkness and given light to the vision of great souls. No one can go beyond your glory. All this, the manifest and the unmanifest, the higher and the lower, is your form.
O unconquered one, when the spotless Lord sends you forth and you enter the army of the Daityas and Dānavas, you blaze on the battlefield, cutting off without pause their arms, bellies, thighs, feet and necks.
O protector of the world, you who can withstand anything have been appointed by the Lord who holds the club to destroy the wicked. For the good fortune of our family, grant welfare to this brāhmaṇa. That will be your kindness to us.
If we have ever given in charity or offered sacrifice, if we have carried out our own duties well, and if our family has honoured brāhmaṇas as worthy of worship, then let this brāhmaṇa be free of his burning.
If the one Lord, the home of every good quality, is pleased with us because we see Him as the self of all beings, then let this brāhmaṇa be free of his burning.
About Śrī Sudarśana Stuti (Ambarīṣa Mahārāja)
King Ambarīṣa spoke these prayers (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 9.5.3 to 9.5.11) to save the sage Durvāsā, who had offended him and was being chased through every world by the blazing Sudarśana cakra. Lord Viṣṇu sent Durvāsā back to the very king he had wronged, and Ambarīṣa, who had waited for the sage's return without eating, praises the disc as fire, sun, moon, dharma and the Lord's own might. He then offers his family's whole store of piety in exchange for the brāhmaṇa's relief, and the cakra grows calm.
