Śrīla Vyāsadeva Praṇāma
Namo 'stu te vyāsa — Obeisances to Śrīla Vyāsadeva
Obeisances to you, O Vyāsa, whose understanding is vast and whose long eyes are like the petals of a lotus in full bloom. It was you who filled the lamp of knowledge with the oil of the Mahābhārata and set it burning.
I honour Vyāsa, great-grandson of Vasiṣṭha and grandson of Śakti, the son of Parāśara and the father of Śuka. No fault touches him, and he is a storehouse of austerity.
I bow to Vyāsa, who is Viṣṇu in Vyāsa's form, and to Viṣṇu, who appears as Vyāsa. Again and again I bow to him, the treasure-house of Vedic wisdom, born in the family of Vasiṣṭha.
About Śrīla Vyāsadeva Praṇāma
The first verse pictures the Mahābhārata as oil poured into a lamp of knowledge that Vyāsa himself set alight. It belongs to the Gītā-dhyānam, the meditation verses many devotees chant before reading the Bhagavad-gītā; their author is not known with certainty. The next two verses come from the opening of the Viṣṇu-sahasra-nāma. One plays on the idea that Vyāsa is Viṣṇu and Viṣṇu is Vyāsa. The other names his whole family line: Vasiṣṭha, Śakti, Parāśara, Vyāsa and his son Śuka.
