Yas Te Manyo 'vidhad

Manyu Sūkta, Ṛg-veda 10.83 — Hymn to Manyu (1)

yas te manyo 'vidhad vajra sāyaka saha ojaḥ puṣyati viśvam ānuṣak sāhyāma dāsam āryaṁ tvayā yujā sahaskṛtena sahasā sahasvatā
Translation

O Manyu, thunderbolt and arrow, whoever has worshipped you gains force and might, all of it, without a break. With you as our ally, born of strength, strong and full of strength, may we overcome every foe, whether Dāsa or Ārya.

manyur indro manyur evāsa devo manyur hotā varuṇo jātavedāḥ manyuṁ viśa īḷate mānuṣīr yāḥ pāhi no manyo tapasā sajoṣāḥ
Translation

Manyu is Indra; Manyu alone was the god; Manyu is the invoking priest, Varuṇa and Jātavedas (Agni). All the human peoples praise Manyu. O Manyu, joined with fervour (tapas), protect us.

abhīhi manyo tavasas tavīyān tapasā yujā vi jahi śatrūn amitrahā vṛtrahā dasyuhā ca viśvā vasūny ā bharā tvaṁ naḥ
Translation

Come here, O Manyu, mightier than the mighty; with fervour (tapas) as your ally, strike down our enemies. You slay foes, you slay Vṛtra, you slay the Dasyus; bring all riches to us.

tvaṁ hi manyo abhibhūtyojāḥ svayambhūr bhāmo abhimātiṣāhaḥ viśvacarṣaṇiḥ sahuriḥ sahāvān asmāsv ojaḥ pṛtanāsu dhehi
Translation

For you, O Manyu, have overpowering might; you are self-born, a blazing wrath that subdues the arrogant foe. You belong to all people, victorious and powerful; place strength in us in the battles.

abhāgaḥ sann apa pareto asmi tava kratvā taviṣasya pracetaḥ taṁ tvā manyo akratur jihīḷāhaṁ svā tanūr baladeyāya mehi
Translation

Left without a share in your power, O mighty and wise one, I have wandered far away. Weak of will, I offended you, O Manyu; now come to me as my very own self, to give me strength.

ayaṁ te asmy upa mehy arvāṅ pratīcīnaḥ sahure viśvadhāyaḥ manyo vajrinn abhi mām ā vavṛtsva hanāva dasyūṁr uta bodhy āpeḥ
Translation

Here I am, yours; turn toward me and come near, O victorious one, sustainer of all. O Manyu, wielder of the thunderbolt, return to me; let us two slay the Dasyus, and remember your friend.

abhi prehi dakṣiṇato bhavā me 'dhā vṛtrāṇi jaṅghanāva bhūri juhomi te dharuṇaṁ madhvo agram ubhā upāṁśu prathamā pibāva
Translation

Go forward and stand at my right hand; then together we shall slay many foes. I offer you the best and sustaining portion of the sweet drink; let the two of us drink it first, in quiet.

About Yas Te Manyo 'vidhad

The first of two Ṛg-veda hymns (10.83 and 10.84) to Manyu, righteous wrath in person, which Vaiṣṇavas recite as a prayer to Lord Nṛsiṁha for protection. Manyu is praised here as Indra, Varuṇa and Agni at once, and the singer, admitting that he had neglected Manyu's worship and was driven back by his enemies, begs him to turn round, stand at his right side and drink the first share of the offering with him.
