Every year, millions of Hindus observe Ekadashi, the 11th lunar day, as a day of fasting and devotion to Lord Vishnu. There are 24 Ekadashis in a year, and each one carries its own significance. But this one stands apart from all the rest.
Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most difficult, the most powerful, and the most rewarding Ekadashi of the entire year. It falls during the peak of summer, in the month of Jyeshtha, and it demands something no other Ekadashi does, the complete abstinence from both food and water.
According to the ancient scriptures, observing just this one Ekadashi with sincere devotion gives you the combined spiritual merit of all 24 Ekadashis of the year. And so, it is rightly called the “King of all Ekadashis.”
In this guide, we’ll cover the need, the 2026 date and parana timings, the story behind this sacred fast, step-by-step puja vidhi, fasting rules, what to do and avoid, and mantras.

What is Nirjala Ekadashi?
Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha (11th day of the bright fortnight) of the Jyeshtha month of the Hindu lunar calendar, which corresponds to May or June in the English calendar.
The name comes from two Sanskrit words: Nir (without) and Jala (water). So Nirjala means “without water.” While all other Ekadashi fasts allow fruits, milk, or at least water, this one allows nothing. Not even a single sip.
It is also known by several other names, each pointing to a different aspect of this Ekadashi:
-
Bhima Ekadashi / Bhimseni Ekadashi: It is named after Pandava hero Bhima, who first observed this fast.
-
Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi: As it was observed during the time of the Pandavas.
-
Papanashini Ekadashi: This Ekadashi is the one that destroys sins (Papa = sin, Nashini = destroyer).
-
Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi: Named after the Hindu month it falls in.
-
Vamana Ekadashi: Another name linked to Lord Vishnu’s Vamana avatar.
This Ekadashi falls in the hottest part of the year intentionally. Going without water in summer heat is an extreme test of discipline and devotion, which is exactly what makes this fast so powerful.
The Story Behind Nirjala Ekadashi: Vrat Katha
The Story of Bhima and Sage Vyasa
Among the five Pandava brothers, Bhima was famous for two things, his extraordinary physical strength and his enormous appetite. He had a powerful digestive fire inside him (called Vrikodara) that made it nearly impossible to go without food, even for a single meal.
His brothers, Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, along with Queen Draupadi, all observed Ekadashi fasts regularly throughout the year. Bhima tried, but he simply could not go without eating.
Troubled by this, Bhima approached his grandfather and revered sage, Rishi Vyasa (compiler of the Vedas and Puranas), and honestly confessed his problem:
“Pitamah, I know that observing Ekadashi is a great act of devotion. But I cannot survive without eating. Is there one single Ekadashi, just one day I can fast, that will give me the spiritual merit of all Ekadashis of the year?”
Rishi Vyasa understood Bhima’s genuine helplessness and told him:
“O Bhima, the Shukla Ekadashi of the month of Jyeshtha is called Nirjala Ekadashi. If you observe this fast without eating or drinking water from sunrise to sunrise the next day, you will receive the punya of all 24 Ekadashis of the entire year.”
Bhima accepted this wholeheartedly. Despite the blazing summer heat, he observed the full Nirjala Ekadashi fast, no food, no water, with complete dedication. The Gods were moved by his devotion, and Bhima received immense divine grace.
This is why Nirjala Ekadashi is also called Bhima Ekadashi. It is believed that anyone who observes this fast with the same sincerity receives the same extraordinary blessings.
What Lord Krishna Says About This Day

In the Mahabharata, when Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the significance of Ekadashis, Krishna said:
“Nirjala Ekadashi is greater than all sacrifices, greater than all charity, or the sacrifice of horses (Ashvamedha) and greater even than seeing Bhagwan Vishnu Himself.”
This gives us a sense of just how much spiritual weight this one day carries.
What is the Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi?
1. Merit of All 24 Ekadashis in One Fast
If you have missed observing Ekadashis throughout the year, due to illness, travel, or other reasons, Nirjala Ekadashi gives you a chance to make up for it. Observing this one fast is scripturally said to be equivalent to fasting on all 24 Ekadashis of the year.
2. Destroys All Past Sins
Sincere fasting and worship on this day is believed to wash away the accumulated sins of a lifetime. This is the reason one of its names is Papanashini Ekadashi.
3. Grants Moksha and Entry to Vaikuntha
According to the Padma Purana and Brahma Vaivarta Purana, a person who observes Nirjala Ekadashi with full faith will never go to hell after death. After leaving the body, Vasu-Dutas, the divine messengers of Lord Vishnu, will come to escort that soul to Vaikuntha, the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu.
4. Removes Sorrow and Suffering
Bathing, donating, and worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day is believed to remove all suffering, difficulties, and sorrows from a devotee’s life.
5. Grants Long Life, Health, and Prosperity
The blessings of this Ekadashi extend to health and longevity. Families of the devotee are also said to receive prosperity and well-being.
6. Purifies the Mind and Body
Fasting helps develop discipline, self-control, and spiritual focus.
How to Observe Nirjala Ekadashi: Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step)
Preparation of Nirjala Ekadashi
-
Eat only one simple, light, sattvic meal a day before ekadashi before sunset. Keep it clean and easy to digest.
-
Avoid rice, meat, onion, garlic, and any heavy or tamasic food.
-
Sleep early. Keep your mind calm and focused on tomorrow’s fast.
On the Day of the Fast (Ekadashi - June 25, 2026)
Step 1: Wake Up in Brahma Muhurta
Wake up, ideally between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM. This time period before sunrise is considered the most auspicious for prayer and spiritual practice.
Step 2: Take a Holy Bath
Bathe with clean water. If available, add a few Tulsi leaves or a few drops of Ganga jal. Wear fresh, clean clothes: yellow or white are considered ideal for Lord Vishnu’s worship.
Step 3: Take the Sankalpa (Sacred Vow)
Sit before the deity or image of Lord Vishnu and take your formal vow (sankalpa) to observe the fast. You can recite:
“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. I take this vow to observe Nirjala Ekadashi with full devotion, without food or water, seeking the grace of Lord Vishnu”.
Step 4: Puja of Lord Vishnu
-
Offer fresh flowers, Tulsi leaves, fruits, and sweets before the Lord.
-
Light a diya (lamp) and incense sticks (dhoop).
-
Yellow flowers and Tulsi are especially dear to Lord Vishnu, prioritise these.
The day of Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi should be spent in devotional activities, especially by continuously chanting the holy names of Lord Krishna, particularly the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, and by reciting or hearing sacred scriptures.
Step 5: Read or Listen to the Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha
Reading or listening to the vrat katha is an essential part of the observance. You can do this in the morning after puja or in the evening. The katha of Bhima and Sage Vyasa is the primary story for this Ekadashi.
Step 6: Spend the Day in Devotion
-
Chant Hare Krishna Maha Mantra throughout the day as much as we can.
-
Read Vedic Scriptures: Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam.
-
Listen To Vaisnava Songs, Do Harinam-Sankirtan
-
Visit temples of Lord Krishna.
-
Full Day Engagement in devotional service.
According to Srila Prabhupada, we should chant as many rounds as possible and develop constant remembrance of Krishna.
Step 7: Evening Aarti
Perform the evening aarti with a lamp. Sing devotional songs and offer final prayers for the day. This is a deeply peaceful moment to reflect on the purpose of the fast.
Step 8: Night Vigil (Jagran)
If you are physically able, stay awake throughout the night in prayer, chanting, and meditation. This is called Jagran and it greatly increases the spiritual merit of the fast. Many ISKCON temples host community night programs on Nirjala Ekadashi.
Step 9: Charity and Donations
Giving charity on Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious and helps deepen one's spirit of service and compassion.
-
Water (Jal Daan), the most significant, given the summer heat
-
Food and grains
-
Clothes and footwear
-
Umbrellas or hand fans
-
Feeding cows is also highly meritorious
Devotees may support devotional projects and charitable initiatives as an offering to Lord Krishna.

How to Break the Fast: Parana Vidhi
The Parana (breaking of the fast) is just as sacred as the fast itself. Doing it correctly completes the observance.
Parana Time for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Friday, June 26, 2026 - 05:25 AM to 08:13 AM (IST)
You must break the fast within this window on Dwadashi morning. Breaking it too early or too late reduces the spiritual merit.
Step-by-Step Parana Process
-
Wake up early on Dwadashi morning and take a bath.
-
Offer final prayers and aarti to Lord Vishnu.
-
Donate food, water, or dakshina to a Brahmin or needy person first.
-
Begin breaking the fast with water, preferably Tulsi water, lemon water, or Gangajal.
-
After 20–30 minutes, have Panakam (water with jaggery, lemon, and black pepper), this gently prepares the stomach.
-
After another 30 minutes, have fresh fruit juice or juicy fruits like watermelon.
-
One hour later, eat a light sattvic meal, khichdi, boiled rice, or simple dal-roti.
-
Avoid oily, spicy, or heavy food immediately after the fast. Your digestive system needs time to wake up.

Who Should Not Observe Nirjala Ekadashi?
Because this fast is completely waterless and falls in peak summer, it is not meant for everyone. The spirit of the fast is devotion, not suffering.
People who should modify or avoid the strict fast:
-
Elderly people with health conditions
-
Pregnant women
-
Children
-
People with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart conditions
-
Anyone on daily medication (medicines often cannot be taken on a completely empty stomach)
If you fall into any of these categories, it is perfectly acceptable, and actually advised, to observe a partial fast with water, fruits, and milk. Lord Vishnu values the sincerity of your heart, not the severity of your suffering.
Practical ISKCON Understanding
-
Nirjala Ekādaśī is traditionally observed without food and water.
-
Devotees should follow according to their health, service, and capacity.
-
Śrīla Prabhupāda did not insist that every devotee must perform a complete waterless fast.
-
For most devotees, observing Ekādaśī by avoiding grains and beans, increasing chanting, hearing, and devotional service is the essential principle.
The Real Goal
Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly taught that fasting is not the goal; advancing in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the goal. Spending the day in:
-
Extra japa,
-
Reading Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,
-
Kīrtana,
-
Service to Kṛṣṇa,
is more important than simply undergoing physical austerity.
Final Thoughts
Nirjala Ekadashi is not just a religious formality, it is a genuine test of inner strength. Bhima, the most powerful warrior in the Mahabharata, who could not skip a single meal, chose to go without food or water in the scorching summer heat, and he succeeded through sheer devotion.
The lesson from this sacred day is timeless: when devotion is real, every limitation can be overcome.
Whether you observe the complete Nirjala fast, a partial fast, or simply spend the day in prayer and service to others, what matters most is the sincerity of your heart.
In 2026, Nirjala Ekadashi falls on Thursday, June 25. Mark the date, prepare in advance, and let this powerful day bring peace, purity, and grace into your life and home.
“One who observes this Ekadashi with full devotion receives the benefit of all other Ekadashis and attains the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu.”
– Padma Purana
