About Bhaja Govindam
Bhaja Govindam is unusual among the songs on this site: its author, Adi Sankaracarya, is not a Vaishnava acarya but the great eighth-century exponent of Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy of non-dual knowledge. Tradition holds that Sankara composed it in Varanasi after watching an elderly scholar endlessly reciting the rules of Sanskrit grammar; moved to compassion, he urged the old man to turn his remaining years toward devotion to Govinda rather than grammar. The refrain, sung after nearly every verse, is Sankara's own answer to that scholar. Several of the verses that follow are traditionally attributed to his own principal disciples, each said to have composed one in his presence, which is why the hymn is also known as the Dvadasa-manjarika-stotram, the twelve-verse garland. What makes Bhaja Govindam remarkable is precisely that it comes from the foremost teacher of jnana, yet insists that knowledge without devotion to Govinda is incomplete, a reminder, even from the Advaita tradition, that bhakti and philosophy were never meant to stand apart.
Bhaja Govindam was composed by Adi Sankaracarya. It appears in More Songs.
