Nityānandāṣṭakam — Eight Verses Glorifying Śrī Nityānanda
His eyes roll in prema and brim with tears, and His restless, gentle gait puts all others to shame. His face is a spotless moon, and His words surpass nectar. With Your boundless qualities You delivered the people of the world, so why have You left me out? All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
Earrings bright as the sun's disc swing against His cheeks. What an incomparable garland of mālatī flowers adorns His limbs with matchless beauty! Maddened by its sweet honey, bees kiss it on every side. All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
His graceful arms reach down to His knees and put to shame the trunk of a maddened elephant. Calling "Brother! Brother!" in a deep voice, He fills the ten directions with the sound. Gods, kinnaras, nāgas and human beings all gaze at Him with their hearts captivated. All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
At times He roars "huṅ!", leaping and bounding, and His roar outdoes the thunder of the clouds. His waist is slender like a lion's or a ḍamaru drum, and He is adorned with blue silk. That Lord runs swiftly along the bank of the Gaṅgā, and the earth trembles under the weight of His feet. All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
The avadhūta ran across the whole earth and flooded it with prema. Not one of the suffering, the poor, the fallen, the argumentative or the wicked was left out. The devotees, like bees, worship His sweet, tender lotus feet and drink their joy. All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
His jewelled anklets sway charmingly and ring very sweetly. The soles of His two feet are an incomparable red, shining like spotless lotuses. Leaving the heavens, the moon has come down to earth to shine as the nails of Nitāi's feet. All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
In fear of Him the serpent of Kali fled, and everyone rejoiced. As the sun's own rays destroy the darkness and make the lotus bloom, so He shines. The earth, long distressed by fear of sin, was freed by Him of her burden. All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
When He smiles a little, it flashes like lightning and charms the hearts of the ladies. That Lord falls to the ground on the bank of the Gaṅgā, absorbed in a mood no one can know. When He tries to speak His lips tremble, and raising His arms He weeps again and again. All glories, all glories to You, beloved of Vasudhā and Jāhnavā! Please give me a place near Your feet.
About Preme Ghūrṇita Nayana Pūrṇita
A Bengali Nityānandāṣṭakam attributed to Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī, sung with Sanskrit-style rhymes ending in "-taṁ". It pictures Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu in full ecstasy: roaring "huṅ!" louder than the clouds, running along the Gaṅgā so that the earth shakes, the moon come down from the sky to shine as His toenails, and the serpent of Kali fleeing in fear. Every verse ends with the same plea to the beloved of His two consorts, Vasudhā and Jāhnavā, for a place near His feet. It is a different hymn from the Sanskrit Nityānandāṣṭakam of Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī.
