Śrī Guru-caraṇa-smaraṇāṣṭakam
Prātaḥ Śrī Tulasī-natiḥ — Remembering the Feet of Śrī Guru
Every morning he bows to Śrī Tulasī, plasters her base with his own hands, and then sits before her, remembering the feet of his Lord and Lady. Each day he himself gathers many flowers for Their service. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
At midday he meditates on the lotus feet of his own Lord and worships Him, offers food, circumambulates, bows down and sings loving praises. He dances, keeps the company of saints, and always relishes the sweet nectar of the meaning of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
In the evening, after washing his feet, his heart eager to bow, offer praise and call out "Jaya!", he goes to see his Lord returning from the forest to the cowherd village. In the fullness of loving bliss, tears stream from his eyes for a long time. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
At night he recites the verses of Śrī Jayadeva, sings his songs and relishes their rasa with the devotees; sometimes he dances in saṅkīrtana in their midst. Absorbed in the loving pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, he stays awake through the night. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
The two syllables "nin-dā" (criticism) have never found their way into his ears. Day after day his tongue tastes only the praise of saintly people. He trusts the whole world and never looks for faults in anyone. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
Whoever falls at his lotus feet, he accepts, and by the power of his mercy he quickly makes that person a worthy vessel of bhakti. Every day he teaches the secrets of bhakti to his servants. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
When a servant bows down with his whole body, he mercifully places his feet on that servant's head. With a lovely smile and the nectar of his merciful glance he lifts the servant's heart, and to awaken prema in him he personally teaches him how to serve at his feet. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
He keeps the nectarean names of the Divine Couple, "Rādhe! Kṛṣṇa!", called out in long, drawn-out tones, dancing ceaselessly on the tip of his tongue. Aho! He takes no notice of anything else; even in whatever little he must do for daily affairs, he remains immersed in prema. Falling to the ground, I joyfully worship my excellent guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa.
O best of masters, O ocean of ever-rising mercy! As a pointer to the nectar of your lotus feet, this eight-verse prayer captures no more than an atom of it. Still, may the bee of my mind hold on to it, quickly attain your company, and in the abode of the charming nikuñjas relish the fragrance of your Lord and Lady.
About Śrī Guru-caraṇa-smaraṇāṣṭakam
Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura's portrait of his own dīkṣā-guru, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa Cakravartī, through one day of his service: bowing to tulasī at dawn and gathering flowers for the Deities, worship and the nectar of the Bhāgavatam at midday, longing for Kṛṣṇa's return from the pastures in the evening, and staying awake at night singing Jayadeva's songs. One verse says the two syllables of the word "criticism" never reached his ears. It is the second song of Stavāmṛta-laharī, right after the Gurvaṣṭakam.
