Śrī Kulaśekhara Āḻvār Praṇāma
Ghuṣyate yasya nagare — Obeisances to Śrī Kulaśekhara Āḻvār
In his royal city the call "On to Śrī Raṅgam!" rang out day after day. With my head bowed I honour that king, Kulaśekhara.
I take shelter of Kulaśekhara, ruler of the earth and a portion of the Kaustubha jewel, who was born at Cola-paṭṭaṇa in Kerala, under the Punarvasu star in the month of Kumbha.
About Śrī Kulaśekhara Āḻvār Praṇāma
The first verse remembers a king in whose capital the cry "Raṅga-yātrā!", the call to go on pilgrimage to Śrī Raṅgam, was heard every day. Śrī Vaiṣṇavas recite it as a taniyan, a dedicatory verse, before Kulaśekhara's Tamil hymns, the Perumāḷ Tirumoḻi. The second is his traditional birth verse: born in Kerala under the Punarvasu star in the month of Kumbha, he is honoured as a part of the Kaustubha gem on Viṣṇu's chest. Śrīla Prabhupāda often quoted verses from his Sanskrit Mukunda-mālā-stotra. The authors of both praṇāma verses are not known.
