Śrī Pṛthvī Devī Praṇāma
Samudra-vasane devi — Obeisances to Mother Earth
O Devī, robed in the seas, the mountains your breast, consort of Lord Viṣṇu, I bow to you. Pardon me as my feet touch you.
About Śrī Pṛthvī Devī Praṇāma
This is the prayer many devotees say on waking, before their feet first touch the floor: it asks Mother Earth to forgive the touch of the feet. The verse draws her as a goddess wearing the oceans as her garment, with the mountains as her breast, and greets her as Viṣṇu-patnī, the wife of Viṣṇu. That title fits the Purāṇic account in which the Lord, as Varāha, lifted Bhū-devī from the depths of the waters. The verse is traditional; its source text has not been established.
