Chapter

Jaladuta Dairy — 1965

From Miscellaneous Songs by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

This chapter holds two items connected to Srila Prabhupada's 1965 voyage to America aboard the cargo ship Jaladuta, which departed Calcutta on August 13 and reached Boston harbor on September 17, a crossing during which he suffered two heart attacks. One entry is a devotional prayer to Krishna's lotus feet that appears among his shipboard diary writings from this period; the other is Markine Bhagavata-dharma, the Bengali poem, opening baro krpa kaile krsna, great mercy you have shown, Krishna, that he wrote by hand just after arriving in Boston harbor on September 18, 1965 — among the most historically significant single pieces of writing in the whole Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of the twentieth century, composed at the very outset of the mission that would carry Krishna consciousness to the West. As with Prabhupada's other compositions on this site, the original text remains under copyright and is not reproduced or paraphrased here.
