Sajani Kanu Se Baraja Bhujanga
O friend, Kanu is the rogue-serpent of Vraja; he has coiled himself around my heart, a sandal tree, and the bird of my religious duty has flown away.
The darkness of his bodily luster resembles the illusion of kohl, and he dwells in a bower-cottage. Through the hissing breath of his flute he spits out sweet venom; his movements are ever crooked, yet grave and composed.
When a graceful girl falls within the corner of his eye, she can no longer stay composed; with his curved reddish lips he drinks in the breeze of chaste women's vows.
In his eyes there lies a matchless poison, compounded further with the bite of his teeth; poison itself is understood as the antidote to poison — so does Govinda dasa praise it.

Govinda dasa Kaviraja, the celebrated sixteenth-century Vaishnava poet of Bengal known for the exquisite craft that earned him the title "Kaviraja" (king of poets), builds this pada on the old convention that a serpent makes its home in a sandalwood tree. Krishna is cast as that very serpent, his dark form coiling around the heroine's sandalwood heart, his flute's breath spreading a sweet venom that only deepens her helpless attraction. The verse closes on a paradox at the heart of much Vraja poetry: poison itself becomes the antidote to poison.
