Chaitanya-charitamrita's Madhya-lila describes one of the great yearly scenes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's life at Jagannatha Puri - the Ratha-yatra, when the Deities of Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra were pulled in procession on their chariots, and Mahaprabhu danced before them surrounded by His own devotees in kirtana. Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami records that the Lord personally arranged the singers into four separate parties before the procession began, and names each singer by position. Govinda Datta stood in the first of those four parties, one of five men chosen to respond to the lead singer's call.

Two Chief Singers, Four Parties #
Before the chariots moved, Chaitanya-charitamrita says Mahaprabhu Himself distributed garlands and sandalwood pulp to the assembled kirtana performers, naming Svarupa Damodara Goswami and Srivasa Thakura as the two chief performers among them. The full company came to twenty-four singers divided into four parties, with two mridanga players added to each - thirty-two people in total, organized, the text says, only after the Lord had personally considered how to divide them. It is a rare moment in Chaitanya-charitamrita where an entire kirtana roster is set down by name rather than described in general terms, which is exactly why a comparatively minor devotee like Govinda Datta appears in the text at all.
The First Party's Singers and Dancer #
Svarupa Damodara was placed at the head of the first party, and Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami names his five responding singers directly: Damodara Pandita, Narayana, Govinda Datta, Raghava Pandit, and Govindananda - the same Govindananda paired with Govinda Datta earlier in the Adi-lila's devotee catalog. Srila Prabhupada's purport to this section adds one further detail: Advaita Acharya Himself was appointed as the dancer for this first party, while a second party was then formed under Srivasa Thakura as chief singer. Being named among only five men chosen to respond to Svarupa Damodara - a devotee Mahaprabhu Himself regarded as the authority on kirtana and rasa alike - is itself a mark of real standing; Chaitanya-charitamrita does not explain how Govinda Datta earned that place, only that he held it.
What the Text Does Not Say #
Chaitanya-charitamrita does not give a year for this particular Ratha-yatra, and Mahaprabhu observed the festival at Puri every year for roughly the last eighteen years of His life, so this scene cannot be dated to a single specific occasion from the text alone. Nor does the text say whether Govinda Datta sang in this same first party in other years, or whether the arrangement changed from one Ratha-yatra to the next. What is fixed is the one snapshot itself: at least once, in a kirtana roster Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami thought important enough to record name by name, Govinda Datta stood among the five singers answering Svarupa Damodara's lead, in a party Advaita Acharya danced in.
