Srila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji

Srila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji (c. 1800 – disappearance date not precisely recorded) is remembered as the "emperor among Vaishnavas" — Vaishnava Sarvabhauma — of his era: a mendicant renunciant of Vrindavana and Nabadwip who wrote no books, founded no institution, and is nonetheless a direct link in the guru-parampara that runs from Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu down to Srila Prabhupada. He is the paramaguru (guru's guru) of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and it was his personal confirmation, in extreme old age, that fixed the site of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's birth at Mayapur once and for all.

A Guru's Guru in the Direct Line #

His own disciple Bhagavata Dasa Babaji gave the babaji order to Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji, who in turn initiated Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura — so that Jagannatha Dasa Babaji stands two full generations before the founder of the Gaudiya Math in this site's own guru-parampara. His own guru lineage reached back, through Madhusudana Dasa Babaji and Uddhava Dasa, to the great Vedanta commentator Srila Baladeva Vidyabhushana. Deities Rescued From Dacoits #

At Suryakunda near Radhakunda he installed and, on one occasion, very nearly lost a pair of Gaura-Nitai Deities to a band of thieves who mistook Their beauty for gold — an episode still remembered by the names of the Deities it produced, Sonara Gaura, worshipped to this day at Dhopapada in Gopalbag. Confirming Mayapur #

His most consequential act came in his extreme old age, when Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, searching for the true and long-lost site of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's birth, asked him to come and confirm it in person. Carried there in a basket by his servant Bihari Dasa — by then too infirm to walk or even open his own eyes unassisted — Jagannatha Dasa Babaji is said to have leapt out unaided at the spot and danced in ecstasy, settling the question for the whole Gaudiya Vaishnava world. A Character Remembered in Anecdote #

The personal glimpses that survive of him — feeding stray dogs from his own plate rather than have them driven away, detecting a hidden twelve rupees despite near-blindness, tearing a piece from his own kaupina to answer a persistent beggar, and condemning in the strongest terms those who recited the Bhagavatam for a professional fee — are preserved because his devoted servant Bihari Dasa witnessed them at close range. Guiding Two Generations of the Datta Family #

He instructed Bhaktivinoda Thakura in hari-bhakti from their first meeting in 1880 onward, and, in one small but consequential episode, personally called on Bhaktivinoda's twelve-year-old son — already an expert in Vedic astronomy — to prepare the Vaishnava calendar still in use today. That boy was Bimala Prasad, later Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.
