Srila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji

gaurāvirbhāva-bhūmes tvaṁ nirdeṣṭā saj-jana-priyaḥ
vaiṣṇava-sārvabhaumaḥ śrī-jagannāthāya te namaḥ

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Sri Jagannatha Dasa Babaji, who is dear to the saintly and honored by the entire Vaishnava community as Vaishnava Sarvabhauma, and who pointed out the very place of Lord Gaura's appearance."

Srila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji is remembered as the "emperor among Vaishnavas," or Vaishnava Sarvabhauma, of his era. He was a renunciant of Vrindavana and Nabadwip who lived on alms. He wrote no books and founded no institution. Still, he is a direct link in the guru-parampara that runs from Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu down to Srila Prabhupada. He is the paramaguru (guru's guru) of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. In his extreme old age, he personally confirmed the site of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's birth at Mayapur, and this settled the question once and for all. He is said to have been born into a noble family in a village in the Tangail subdivision of the Mayamanasimha district of Bengal, in present-day Bangladesh. Sources do not agree on the year of his birth. Some place it around 1750 and others closer to 1800, so we report it here as an open question, not a settled fact. A Guru's Guru in the Direct Line #

His own disciple Bhagavata Dasa Babaji gave the babaji order to Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji (most sources agree on this, though not every source does). Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji in turn initiated Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. According to this account, Jagannatha Dasa Babaji stands two full generations before the founder of the Gaudiya Math in the guru-parampara traced here. His own guru lineage went back through Madhusudana Dasa Babaji and Uddhava Dasa Babaji to the great Vedanta commentator Srila Baladeva Vidyabhushana.

Deities Rescued From Dacoits #

At Suryakunda near Radhakunda he installed a pair of Gaura-Nitai Deities. Once he very nearly lost Them to a band of thieves, who mistook Their beauty for gold. Because of this episode the Deities are still called Sonara Gaura, and They are worshipped to this day at Dhopapada in Gopalbag. That story, a second Deity found hidden in a sack of cattle feed, and his long journey from Vraja to Nabadwip by rail and bullock cart, are told here.

Confirming Mayapur #

His most important act came in his extreme old age. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura was searching for the true and long-lost site of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's birth, and he asked Jagannatha Dasa Babaji to come and confirm it in person. By then Jagannatha Dasa Babaji was too weak to walk, or even to open his own eyes without help. His servant Bihari Dasa carried him there in a basket. At the spot, he is said to have leapt out without any help and danced in ecstasy. This settled the question for the whole Gaudiya Vaishnava world. A Character Remembered in Anecdote #

Some personal glimpses of him still survive. He fed stray dogs from his own plate instead of letting them be driven away. He returned a rich man's single rupee, because he could not bear even that small a burden. Though he was almost blind, he could find hidden coins. And he condemned in the strongest terms those who recited the Bhagavatam for a professional fee. These glimpses are preserved because his devoted servant Bihari Dasa saw them at close range. Guiding Two Generations of the Datta Family #

From their first meeting in Vrindavana in 1880 onward, he instructed Bhaktivinoda Thakura in hari-bhakti. In one small but important episode, he personally asked Bhaktivinoda's twelve-year-old son (already an expert in Vedic astronomy) to prepare the Vaishnava calendar that is still in use today. That boy was Bimala Prasad, later Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.
