Sri Yadunandana Acharya
Priest and Diksha-Guru of Raghunatha Dasa Goswami
Also known as Yadunandana Ācārya, Jadunandana Acharya, Yadunandan Acharya
“Please induce the brahmana to resume the service, for there is no other brahmana to do it.”
Yadunandana Acharya asking Raghunatha Dasa Goswami for help on the night of Raghunatha's escape to Jagannatha Puri, Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila 6.165
Sri Yadunandana Acharya's name appears in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, but almost no life story comes with it. There is no birth year, no account of his childhood, and no work that has come down under his own name. Yet every fact that Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami does give about him points the same way. He was a Bengali brahmana who became, in two different ways at once, one of the two or three people who did most to bring Raghunatha Dasa Goswami to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at all. He was Raghunatha's family priest, his early guru, and, on the single night that mattered most, the man who made his escape possible.

A Household Priest in Bengal #
Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita places Yadunandana Acharya's own house a short walk east of the house of Govardhana Majumadara, Raghunatha Dasa's father, in the Saptagrama area of Hooghly district in Bengal. Govardhana's was the same wealthy household described in Raghunatha Dasa Goswami's own account. In one verse, Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami calls him both purohita, the family's ritual priest, and guru. He was Raghunatha's spiritual teacher from childhood, before Raghunatha ever met Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in person. The family collected a share of the Mughal empire's tax revenue and lived among great wealth. Yadunandana Acharya could enter its inner rooms every day. Yet, as it turned out, he was the one such person who had no wish to keep the family's heir at home.
Diksha From Advaita Acharya #
Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami is direct about where Yadunandana Acharya's own diksha came from. A verse of the Antya-lila states that he had been officially initiated by Advaita Acharya. It says that because of this initiation he held Lord Chaitanya as his very life and soul. Elsewhere, in the Adi-lila, one chapter lists the branches of Advaita Acharya's own tree of disciples. There the text places Yadunandana Acharya fifth among them. It also adds something that is easy to miss on a first reading. He had so many branches and sub-branches of his own, meaning disciples and their disciples in turn, that the text does not even attempt to list them. Yadunandana Acharya is remembered mainly for what he did for one person. Yet he was himself a teacher with a following so large that Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami gave up trying to count it.
The Mercy of Vasudeva Datta #
Alongside the first relationship, the text speaks of a second one that sounds different. In that same Antya-lila passage, the verse just before the one naming Advaita Acharya says that Yadunandana Acharya, though born a brahmana, had accepted the mercy of Vasudeva Datta Thakura. A separate verse in the Adi-lila repeats the idea in stronger words. It calls him fully a receiver of Vasudeva Datta's mercy, and says that this was what let him take shelter of Lord Chaitanya's feet in every way. If each is read on its own, the two relationships, diksha from Advaita Acharya and mercy from Vasudeva Datta, could seem to be rival claims about the same relationship. Srila Prabhupada's own purport to an earlier verse even puts the two together in a single sentence, saying that Vasudeva Datta "initiated" Yadunandana Acharya. But in the fuller narrative, Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami places the two verses about these relationships back to back on purpose. Seen in that light, the more exact picture holds. Yadunandana Acharya received formal diksha from Advaita Acharya. From Vasudeva Datta he received something the text names separately as mercy. That mercy was real, and worth its own verse twice over. This distinction follows what the accounts of Raghunatha Dasa Goswami and Vasudeva Datta Thakura have already worked out. It does not pick one relationship and set the other aside. The two verses behind this distinction, and how Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita's own tree imagery frames both relationships, are examined more closely in Diksha From Advaita Acharya, and the Mercy of Vasudeva Datta.
The Night He Helped Raghunatha Escape #
Yadunandana Acharya was a teacher with many disciples. But the single act that has kept his name alive in Gaudiya Vaishnava memory took only a few hours of one night. For years, Raghunatha Dasa Goswami had tried and failed to leave his father's house for Jagannatha Puri. He finally got past the household's guards because his own family priest invented a reason for him to leave the house. Then the priest let him walk the rest of the way alone. The fuller account is told in The Night He Helped Raghunatha Escape. It includes the disciple whose neglected Deity worship gave the priest his excuse.
A Legacy Without a Written Record #
No source gives a birth year, a disappearance year, or a place for either. Nothing survives that Yadunandana Acharya is known to have written himself, and no samadhi or temple bearing his name appears in any source. What remains is what Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami chose to record. In the Adi-lila, Yadunandana Acharya's name is placed among the branches of the tree of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own associates. He is also named as the fifth branch of Advaita Acharya's own line, with disciples too many to count. And there is the quiet fact that when Raghunatha Dasa Goswami most needed someone willing to help him leave everything behind, it was his own priest who made it possible.
