Pariśiṣṭa — Appendix

Parisista, meaning appendix, is the section that closes Gitavali, gathering material that belonged to Bhaktivinoda Thakura's larger 1893 collection of seventy songs but did not fit into any of the book's other eleven named, purpose-built sections — arati songs, prasadam songs, the two eight-verse sequences on Mahaprabhu's teaching and the holy name, the hundred-names sections, and the rest. Its single song addresses eager, sensory delight in tasting food already offered to Krishna, connecting it thematically to Prasada-sebaya, the section on honoring prasadam that appears earlier in the book, even though Bhaktivinoda placed it here at the very end rather than folding it into that earlier section. This kind of appendix, functioning much as one does in a printed reference work, is a comparatively unusual structural choice for a devotional songbook, and its presence suggests Bhaktivinoda thought of Gitavali's overall architecture with real deliberateness — songs that did not cleanly belong to a themed section were not simply scattered throughout the book, but gathered here, at its close.
