“No, you please give me your mercy. I need it more.”

His habitual reply whenever a devotee bowed down before him and asked for his blessings, recalled by disciples of Srila Prabhupada in Back to Godhead, September 1982

Srila Akincana Krishna Dasa Babaji Maharaja was a Bengali renunciant of the Gaudiya Math whose entire practice, so far as any account of his life records, was chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. He took diksha from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, which made him a direct godbrother of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness - Prabhupada's own diksha-guru remained Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura throughout, and Krishna Dasa Babaji stood alongside him as a fellow disciple, not above him in any guru-disciple sense. Srila Prabhupada described him with two words that stuck: akincana, meaning one who possesses nothing, and paramahamsa, a swan-like pure devotee. He disappeared at Nandagrama on 12 April 1982.

A Godbrother from East Bengal #

Krishna Dasa Babaji was born in East Bengal, in a district and a year that none of the surviving accounts record, toward the end of the nineteenth century. What is recorded is that his attraction to Krishna consciousness began while he was still a college student, and that it carried him into the Gaudiya Math - the preaching mission Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura was then building across Bengal - where he received diksha initiation directly from Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura himself. That single fact of initiation placed him, for the rest of his life, among the same circle of godbrothers as A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Srila Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Maharaja and the other disciples who would go on to carry the mission forward after their guru's disappearance in 1937.

Chanting as His Only Service #

What set Krishna Dasa Babaji apart from his godbrothers, almost from the start, was a refusal to take on any of the usual temple duties - deity worship, cooking, preaching, editing, distributing literature - in favor of chanting the holy names, alone or in kirtana, for as many hours of the day as he was awake. Some godbrothers found this hard to accept as a legitimate service and complained to Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura about it. How their guru settled the matter, and what it reveals about the value Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura placed on undistracted chanting even when it looked like idleness to everyone around it, is told in full on Bhaktisiddhanta Defends a Single-Minded Chanter.

A Life Without an Institution #

Here the record is unusually consistent, and worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over: every substantial account of Krishna Dasa Babaji's life, including the one printed by Srila Prabhupada's own Back to Godhead magazine within months of his passing, says he never took a disciple. That word babaji itself carried this meaning in the Gaudiya Math of his generation - a renunciant absorbed in personal bhajana rather than institution-building or active preaching, in contrast to the sannyasis and brahmacaris who ran temples, published books and initiated their own disciples. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura founded a preaching mission that spread across India; Srila Prabhupada carried the same mission to the entire world and initiated thousands of disciples of his own. Krishna Dasa Babaji, initiated by the same guru as both of them, chose a different and much narrower path, and by every source consulted for this page he kept to it without deviation for the rest of his life. Readers researching the wider network of teachers who trace their diksha or siksha to Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's own disciples should not look to Krishna Dasa Babaji for that connection - the sources available do not support it, and this page makes no such claim.

Recognized Among the Godbrothers #

Despite building nothing institutional, Krishna Dasa Babaji was held in unusual regard by the very godbrothers who ran the Gaudiya Math's temples and missions. He was present, chanting kirtana, at Srila Prabhupada's own sannyasa initiation at the Kesavaji Gaudiya Math in Mathura on 17 September 1959, and later recalled that Prabhupada's instruction to him that day - to chant more - was the moment he sensed Prabhupada would one day carry the holy name across the entire world. At the 1976 Gaura Purnima festival in Mayapur, Srila Prabhupada invited Sridhara Maharaja to share his own vyasasana seat; by one detailed account of the festival, Krishna Dasa Babaji was the only other godbrother given that same honor. He visited Prabhupada again in November 1977, in the last days before Prabhupada's own disappearance, chanting and talking with him even as those around them grew somber.

Final Days at Nandagrama #

After a serious illness in March 1981, Krishna Dasa Babaji asked to be brought to Nandagrama, to the bhajana-sthali on the bank of Pavana Sarovara where Srila Sanatana Gosvami himself had once performed bhajana, to spend whatever time remained to him. What his last year there looked like, and the devotional accounts - carefully distinguished here from what can actually be verified - that grew up around his final months, are told on Final Days at Pavana Sarovara. He disappeared there on 12 April 1982, and his samadhi remains at that same site today. A full-length biography, Babhru Dasa's Divine Intoxication: The Life and Love of Srila Akincana Krishna Dasa Babaji Maharaja, was published decades later, drawn substantially from the memories of devotees who had known him - itself a sign of how much of what is known about this particular acharya survives only in memoir rather than in any earlier documentary record.
