Songs of the Gaudiya Vaishnava Acaryas contains 223 songs, composed by Narahari dāsa, arranged in 42 chapters.
Songs of the Gaudiya Vaishnava Acaryas gathers 223 songs from forty-two different poets of the padavali-kirtan tradition — Bengali devotional verse composed by direct associates of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and by poets writing in the generations that followed, sixteenth and seventeenth century chiefly. Each chapter here holds one poet's own bhanita, the signature line by which padavali verses traditionally identify their author. The overwhelming majority of the collection is gaura-candrika: songs describing Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own appearance at Navadvipa on Phalguna Purnima, His mother Saci's joy, His father Jagannatha Misra's household, and above all His own golden beauty, sung traditionally as an invocatory sequence before a kirtan turns to Radha-Krishna's own pastimes. A handful of poets represented here — Locana dasa Thakura, Vrndavana dasa Thakura, the three Ghosh brothers, Govinda dasa Kaviraja — are independently well documented historical figures with their own biographies and other major works; most of the remaining names are known chiefly, on this site as elsewhere, through the handful of songs gathered under their signature in collections exactly like this one, with little further biographical record beyond that. Where the record allows it, each chapter here says what is genuinely known; where it does not, the chapter stays honest about that rather than inventing a life to fill the space.
