Narahari dāsa

Narahari dasa's fifty-seven songs, gathered in this chapter of the Songs of the Gaudiya Vaishnava Acaryas anthology, belong to the padavali-kirtan tradition — the body of Bengali devotional verse composed by poets close to, or writing soon after, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own lifetime, alongside contemporaries such as Govinda dasa, Balarama dasa, Locana dasa, and Vasudeva Ghosa, several of whom are represented in their own chapters elsewhere in this same book. The songs collected here are overwhelmingly gaura-candrika, poems celebrating Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own appearance at Navadvipa on Phalguna Purnima: the joy in Saci Devi's household, Jagannatha Misra's happiness at his son's birth, the wonder of the whole town on that night. It is worth being direct about a genuine uncertainty here rather than asserting more than is actually known: the padavali tradition is well documented to have poets who share very similar names and who sometimes signed their verses with more than one bhanita, and this site's own author records separately list a Narahari Sarakara alongside this Narahari dasa. Whether the poet behind these fifty-seven songs is the same historical figure as Narahari Sarkar Thakura, a celebrated direct associate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu from Srikhanda, is not something this site can confirm — the songs are presented here under the name the source collection itself uses for them.
