Srila Chandrashekhara Acharya

Srila Chandrashekhara Acharya was a physician (vaidya) and learned brahmana of Varanasi, also called Kashi, who became one of only three devotees Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is said to have kept in that city. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita names him alongside Tapana Mishra and, later, Tapana Mishra's son Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami as the Lord's circle at Kashi. Twice Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stayed as a guest in his home, and it was at his own doorway that Sanatana Goswami, disguised as a Muslim mendicant, found his way back to the Lord after escaping a Bengal prison. Little independent history survives about Chandrashekhara Acharya outside these events, but on his profession, his household and his hospitality, the sources are specific and consistent.

A Physician Among the Panditas of Kashi #

Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita's own list of Mahaprabhu's Varanasi devotees calls him simply "the physician Candrasekhara" - vaidya being both his trade and, in the text, practically his surname. A traditional life of the household built around Tapana Mishra adds that he also worked with his own hand as a scribe, copying scripture for the learned brahmanas of the city in a fine style of calligraphy, and that he came from a family long recognized for its scholarship. None of this made him unusual for Varanasi, a city that had drawn scholars and physicians for centuries. What made him unusual was that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, passing through on His travels, chose to stay in his home rather than simply visit it - not once, but twice. One further point matters for anyone researching him: more than one Vaishnava associate carried the name Chandrasekhara. A separate figure, usually called Chandrasekhara Acharya or Acharyaratna, lived in Navadvipa beside the house of Mahaprabhu's own father, hosted the Lord's early kirtans there, and is described in some sources as a relative on His mother's side. Srila Prabhupada himself, in a recorded conversation with Srila Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Maharaja, drew the line between the two directly, confirming that the Varanasi Chandrasekhara "was a vaidya" and a distinct person from the Navadvipa one. The physician of this page has no documented family tie to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and - despite an idea sometimes floated about him - none to Sanatana Goswami or Rupa Goswami either, though his house is where one of the most important meetings in Sanatana's life took place.

A House the Lord Called Home Twice #

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu first passed briefly through Varanasi on His way to Vrindavana; Chandrasekhara Acharya came out on hearing the news and returned again when the Lord came back from Vrindavana toward Jagannatha Puri. This second time He stayed a full two months, living under Chandrasekhara Acharya's own roof while taking His daily meals at Tapana Mishra's house nearby - an arrangement Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita records in a single, matter-of-fact couplet, as though two months of the Lord's personal residence needed no further comment. During this stay Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also debated the Mayavadi sannyasis of Kashi, led by the scholar Prakashananda Sarasvati, and won them over to devotional service - an event Chandrasekhara Acharya witnessed alongside Tapana Mishra and Sanatana Goswami. The Mendicant at the Door #

It was during this same two-month stay that Sanatana Goswami, having resigned his post under Nawab Hussain Shah and escaped the prison the Nawab had put him in, arrived at Chandrasekhara Acharya's house disguised as a Muslim mendicant and sat down quietly by the door, unwilling to presume on a stranger's hospitality. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, inside the house, knew at once who had come and told Chandrasekhara Acharya to bring the man in. What followed - the recognition, the tearful embrace, and Chandrasekhara Acharya's own part in clothing and receiving Sanatana Goswami - is one of the best-documented scenes of Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita's Varanasi chapters, and is told fully in Relationship to Sanatana and Rupa Goswami.

An Unrecorded End #

No source consulted for this page gives a birth year, a disappearance year, or a place of samadhi for Chandrasekhara Acharya of Varanasi, and none records a specific diksha-guru for him. What is recorded is that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, meeting Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami again years later at Jagannatha Puri, still asked after Tapana Mishra and Chandrasekhara Vaidya by name - a small sign of how firmly the Lord held Kashi's devotees in mind, even without further biography attached to it. This is, honestly, a thinner record than exists for many of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's other associates, and this set of pages reports that thinness rather than filling it with invented detail.
