Srila Chandrashekhara Acharya

Srila Chandrashekhara Acharya was a learned physician (vaidya) of Varanasi, also called Kashi. He is said to have been one of only three devotees that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had in that city. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita names him alongside Tapana Mishra and, later, Tapana Mishra's son Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami as the Lord's circle at Kashi. Twice Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stayed as a guest in his home. At his doorway, Sanatana Goswami, disguised as a Muslim wandering beggar, found his way back to the Lord after escaping from a prison in Bengal. Little independent history survives about Chandrashekhara Acharya outside these events. But the sources are specific and consistent about his profession, his household and his hospitality.

A Physician Among the Panditas of Kashi #

Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita's own list of Mahaprabhu's Varanasi devotees calls him simply "the physician Candrasekhara." In the text, vaidya is both his trade and almost his surname. A traditional account centred on Tapana Mishra's household adds that he also worked with his own hand as a scribe. He copied scripture for the learned brahmanas of the city in a fine style of calligraphy. The same account says that he came from a family long known for its scholarship. None of this made him unusual for Varanasi, a city that had drawn scholars and physicians for centuries. But when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu passed through on His travels, He chose to stay in his home, not simply visit it, and He did so twice. That is what made him unusual. One more point matters for anyone researching him: more than one Vaishnava associate carried the name Chandrasekhara. A separate figure, usually called Chandrasekhara Acharya or Acharyaratna, lived in Navadvipa beside the house of Mahaprabhu's own father. He hosted the Lord's early kirtans there, and some sources describe him as a relative on His mother's side. In a recorded conversation with Srila Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Maharaja, Srila Prabhupada himself clearly separated the two. He confirmed that the Varanasi Chandrasekhara "was a vaidya" and a different person from the Navadvipa one. This Varanasi physician has no documented family tie to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Some people have suggested that he was related to Sanatana Goswami or Rupa Goswami, but there is no documented tie to them either. Still, his house is where one of the most important meetings in Sanatana's life took place.

A House the Lord Called Home Twice #

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu first passed briefly through Varanasi on His way to Vrindavana. Chandrasekhara Acharya came out when he heard the news. He came again when the Lord passed back through, on His way from Vrindavana toward Jagannatha Puri. This second time the Lord stayed a full two months. He lived under Chandrasekhara Acharya's own roof and took His daily meals at Tapana Mishra's house nearby. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita records this arrangement in a single, simple couplet, as if two months of the Lord's stay in his home needed no further comment. During this stay Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also debated the Mayavadi sannyasis of Kashi, led by the scholar Prakashananda Sarasvati, and won them over to devotional service. The Mendicant at the Door #

During this same two-month stay, Sanatana Goswami arrived at Chandrasekhara Acharya's house. He had resigned his post under Nawab Hussain Shah and escaped the prison the Nawab had put him in. Disguised as a Muslim wandering beggar, he sat down quietly by the door. He did not want to take a stranger's hospitality for granted. Inside the house, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu knew at once who had come, and He told Chandrasekhara Acharya to bring the man in. Then came the recognition and the tearful embrace, and Chandrasekhara Acharya played his own part in clothing and receiving Sanatana Goswami. An Unrecorded End #

No source gives a birth year, a disappearance year, or a place of samadhi for Chandrasekhara Acharya of Varanasi, and none records a specific diksha-guru for him. But one thing is recorded. Years later, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu met Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami again at Jagannatha Puri, and He still asked after Tapana Mishra and Chandrasekhara Vaidya by name. This small sign shows how firmly the Lord held Kashi's devotees in mind, even though the record tells us nothing more about them. The record for Chandrasekhara Acharya is thinner than the one that survives for many of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's other associates.
