Bhakti Pratikūla Bhāva Varjanāṅgīkāra — Renunciation of Conduct Unfavorable to Pure Devotion

This section takes up the second of Srila Rupa Gosvami's six classical limbs of surrender, pratikulyasya varjanam, the conscious rejection of whatever works against devotion to Krishna. Its four songs work through this theme in a deliberate pair with what would traditionally be the first limb, accepting the favorable: Bhaktivinoda Thakura places rejection first in Saranagati's actual sequence, arguing in effect that clearing away obstacles has to come before, or at least alongside, taking up positive practice. The section's songs name specific obstacles directly rather than treating rejection only in the abstract — attachment to sense enjoyment (visaya) and impersonalist philosophy (mayavada) are both named explicitly, reflecting arguments Bhaktivinoda developed at greater length in his prose writings defending devotional theism against impersonalist readings of Vedanta. The section closes by naming a specific, real place, Svananda-sukhada-kunja in Godruma, one of the nine islands of Sridhama Mayapura where Bhaktivinoda himself lived and wrote much of his later devotional poetry, grounding what could have remained a purely doctrinal discussion in an actual location tied to his own devotional life.
