Srila Narahari Sarkar Thakura

Guru to Lochana Dasa Thakura

The order that produced Sri Chaitanya-mangala, and what it meant that a Srikhanda poet's own disciple wrote it.

Srikhanda, Bengal, in the generation of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Navadvipa pastimes

By the time a young man named Lochana Dasa arrived at Srikhanda from the nearby village of Kograma, Narahari Sarkar Thakura was already an accomplished poet and composer in his own right, author of Sanskrit and Bengali devotional verse that had begun, since his own entry into Mahaprabhu's circle, to focus increasingly on Gauranga's own person and pastimes. It was into that already-formed literary and devotional household that Lochana Dasa Thakura came seeking shelter and initiation.

Taking In a Disciple From Kograma #

According to this site's own fuller account on Lochana Dasa Thakura's page, Discipleship Under Narahari Sarkara Thakura, Lochana Dasa Thakura took up residence at Narahari's ashram in Srikhanda after receiving initiation from him, and there learned the art of kirtana directly under his guru's own guidance — the same personal service, fanning and singing before Mahaprabhu, that had defined Narahari's own place among the Lord's associates. Lochana Dasa Thakura's own later writing leaves no doubt about how completely he understood himself to depend on Narahari: in the opening invocation of Sri Chaitanya-mangala itself he addresses his guru directly, and across the work he returns again and again to that same dependence as the one thing that made his own composition possible at all. From Narahari's own side, the relationship is recorded far more sparingly — Gaudiya Vaishnava sources say little about what he himself felt or said about his disciple's growing literary project while it was underway, a gap this page reports rather than fills with invented detail.

An Order in a Vernacular Language #

What Narahari asked of his disciple was specific: not simply devotional practice, but a particular literary task, composed in Bengali rather than in Sanskrit, so that people without scholarly training could enter directly into the sweetness of Mahaprabhu's own pastimes. It is a request that fits naturally with what is known of Narahari's own writing career — a poet who had himself moved, over the course of his life, from Sanskrit compositions toward vernacular devotional song, and who plainly wanted Mahaprabhu's life told in the language ordinary Bengali villagers actually spoke. Lochana Dasa Thakura spent years fulfilling that order, working from an existing Sanskrit account by Murari Gupta as related through Damodara Pandita, and completed Sri Chaitanya-mangala in 1537 in the Panchali verse-style of eastern Bengal.

A Legacy Carried Forward by Another's Hand #

Sri Chaitanya-mangala went on to become one of the two principal poetic biographies of Mahaprabhu still read today, alongside Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami's own Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita — and it carries Narahari's name and wish inside it as plainly as it carries Lochana Dasa Thakura's own. This is, in a real sense, Narahari's most consequential act as a guru: not a miracle, not a public teaching, but a single order given to one disciple, whose fulfillment shaped how generations of Bengali Vaishnavas would come to know Mahaprabhu's own life. The fuller story of Lochana Dasa Thakura's own composition of that work, including the honest disagreement among sources over how it came to be told apart from Vrindavana Dasa Thakura's earlier Chaitanya-bhagavata, is told on Writing Sri Chaitanya-mangala. Narahari's own further writings, and the honest questions later Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition raised about one strand of Srikhanda's devotional poetry, are told on Works, Disappearance, and a Later Controversy Honestly Noted.
