Prārthanā Dainyamayī — Humble Prayers

Prarthana-Dainyamayi, prayers filled with dainya, humility, belongs to Ucchvasa, the third and final division of Kalyana-Kalpataru, and follows directly after the reader has already moved through Updesa's instruction and Upalabdhi's realization — so that humility here follows genuine self-examination rather than standing as an isolated confession. Its four songs open with unguarded self-accusation, move through the specific distortion worldly desire works upon the heart, and close on a hyperbolic declaration that no one lower than the singer exists anywhere in the world — a convention common throughout Gaudiya Vaishnava devotional poetry, meant to strip away any trace of remaining spiritual pride rather than to be read literally. Bhaktivinoda Thakura closes the section on this note before the book turns to Prarthana-Lalasamayi, its much longer section of prayers of longing, letting humility give way to hope rather than ending on despair alone.
