Anutāpa lakṣaṇa upalabdhi — Repentance

Anutapa, repentance, is the second half of Upalabdhi, realization, in Kalyana-Kalpataru, following directly after Nirveda-laksana-upalabdhi. Where that earlier section worked through disillusionment with the world in general terms, this one turns the same scrutiny inward: its five songs open with blunt self-accusation and move through specific regrets — failure to seek the company of genuine devotees, time slipped away in ordinary work, suffering only fully recognized once actually seen clearly. Bhaktivinoda Thakura wrote this section in the same intimate, first-person register he would return to more than a decade later across Saranagati, suggesting this style of direct, unguarded confession was a consistent feature of his devotional writing from early in his career rather than something he developed only later. The section, and with it the whole Upalabdhi division, closes on an unflinching acknowledgment of suffering, before Kalyana-Kalpataru turns to Sambandha-abhidheya-prayojana and the sections of prayer and glorification that make up the book's third and final division.
