Sri Dayanidhi

Sri Dayanidhi occupies the twelfth position in the traditional Gaudiya guru-parampara list this website is researching -- placed as the disciple of Jnanasindhu and the guru of Vidyanidhi -- but he is also the one name in this three-link stretch where this project's own two Gaudiya-tradition sources genuinely disagree with each other, rather than simply being silent.

Two Sources, Two Different Names #

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's devotional song "Sri Guru-parampara" ("Krishna hoite catur-mukha"), printed in the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust's *Songs of the Vaishnava Acharyas*, names him directly: "tara dasye jnanasindhu tore, taha hoite dayanidhi, tara dasa vidyanidhi" -- "in his [Jayatirtha's] service was Jnanasindhu; from him came Dayanidhi; his servant was Vidyanidhi." The prose note accompanying the song repeats the same name in its own summary list of the full succession: "...Jayatirtha, Jnanasindhu, Dayanidhi, Vidyanidhi, Rajendra..."

Kavi Karnapura's older *Sri Gaura-Ganoddesha-dipika* (Text 22), by contrast, names a different disciple in this exact position: "Jnanasindhu's disciple was Mahanidhi. Mahanidhi's disciple was Vidyanidhi." Both names share the same second half (*-nidhi*, "treasure" or "repository"), and both authors agree on everyone standing immediately before and after this position -- Jnanasindhu behind, Vidyanidhi ahead -- but they disagree about who filled it. This project has found no way to settle which reading is more original, and reports both rather than silently picking one; the compiler of the Vedic Encyclopedia's own guru-parampara page, who lays out both quotations side by side, calls this exactly what it is: "an air of vagueness and uncertainty of dates and even the lineage" surrounding the Madhva mathas' own records.

No Independent Record Beyond the List #

As with Jnanasindhu, no independent Dvaita-tradition source -- B. N. K. Sharma's academic history, Wikipedia's article on Vidyadhiraja Tirtha, or any matha's own published succession list -- names a Dayanidhi (or a Mahanidhi) as an installed pontiff between Jayatirtha and Vidyadhiraja Tirtha. The documented line at the Madhva Pitha runs directly from Jayatirtha to his actual recorded successor. Whether Dayanidhi (or Mahanidhi) held some other position -- a personal instructor, a disciple who never took the pontifical seat -- or belongs to devotional memory alone, this project cannot say. No birth year, birthplace, title, written work, or samadhi site could be found for him under either name.

An Explicit Academic Verdict, Found On This Deeper Pass #

The original research on this page could report only that no independent Dvaita-tradition source it checked -- Wikipedia, B. N. K. Sharma's academic history -- named a Dayanidhi (or Mahanidhi) as an installed pontiff. A deeper pass through the full text of Sharma's *History of the Dvaita School of Vedanta and Its Literature* turns up a direct, named engagement with this exact question. Discussing the guru-parampara recorded by Kavi Karnapura and Baladeva Vidyabhushana, Sharma writes that the genealogy is "to some extent, defective," and states: "The names of Jnanasindhu and Dayanidhi are nowhere to be found among the successors of Jayatirtha. Vidyanidhi is evidently a mistake for Vidyadhiraja and Jayadharma a variant of Jayadhvaja" (p. 525).

This is worth being precise about. Sharma names Dayanidhi specifically, in the same sentence as Jnanasindhu, and reaches the same conclusion for both: neither appears among Jayatirtha's documented successors. A search of every genealogical table in Sharma's book -- covering not only the Uttaradi Matha line but all eight original Udupi mathas and their own many centuries of successors -- turns up no Dayanidhi anywhere, and no Mahanidhi either; the closest match, a twentieth-century pontiff of an unrelated matha named "Dayanidhi" who died in 1955, belongs to a different institution entirely, centuries later, and is obviously not this figure. Sri Uttaradi Matha's own official website confirms the same absence institutionally: its numbered guru-parampara page moves directly from Sri Jayateertha to Sri Vidyadhiraja Tirtha, with no Dayanidhi (or Mahanidhi) named at any point in the official succession.

What this deeper pass has not found is any positive record of Dayanidhi (or Mahanidhi) under either name, in either the Uttaradi Matha's own tradition or in any independent Dvaita-tradition source -- no birth year, no matha, no written work, no disciple beyond the parampara position itself. The honest gap already reported here stands: whether Dayanidhi was a real disciple of Jnanasindhu honored in devotional memory without ever holding pontifical office, or whether the name entered the Gaudiya list through some other channel, this project still cannot say.
