Srila Pundarika Vidyanidhi

Srila Pundarika Vidyanidhi is one of the more surprising figures among Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's associates. He was a rich man who lived in open luxury. At the same time his soul was so absorbed in love of Krishna that Mahaprabhu called him father and wept for him before the two had even met. Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami names him the third great branch of the Chaitanya tree. Kavi Karnapura's Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika identifies him as Vrishabhanu Maharaja, the father of Srimati Radharani, in Krishna's Vraja pastimes.

Family and Native Place #

Pundarika Vidyanidhi's people were Varendra brahmanas whose ancestral home was in a village called Baghiya near Dhaka. But the family had long since settled at Mekhala, a village near Hathazari in the Chittagong district of what is now Bangladesh. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura traced the family in his Anubhashya to the Chaitanya-charitamrita. He records that the family had been in conflict with another group of brahmanas, the Radhiya, in one of the disputes that arose from time to time between the two communities. For a time the family had lost the social respect its learning deserved. Pundarika Vidyanidhi's father is named Baneshvara, who is supposed to be a descendant of Sivarama Gangopadhyaya. Another account names his father as Shuklambara Brahmachari. His mother was Gangadevi. He was born on Vasanta-panchami, the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Magha, at Chakrashala. His wife, Ratnavati, is identified in the same list of Vraja identities as Kirtida, the mother of Srimati Radharani. So husband and wife together carry the identities of Radharani's parents.

What Vidyanidhi Means #

The name is a plain Sanskrit compound of vidya, learning, and nidhi, a treasure or reservoir: a treasure-house of learning. It was not a title of honor given for piety. Pundarika Vidyanidhi was truly a zamindar, a landowner of real wealth at Chakrashala. He had homes in both Chittagong and Nabadwip and a reputation for scholarship to match his fortune. Later, after the episode described on Initiating Gadadhara Pandit, Mahaprabhu gave him the further title Premanidhi, treasure-house of divine love, and his own associates came to call him Acharyanidhi as well. But the wealth itself was never a show he put on. He lived exactly as rich as he appeared to be. What no one could see from outside was that his heart was richer still.

Disciple of Madhavendra Puri #

According to the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika and the older devotional biography Prema-vilasa, Pundarika Vidyanidhi took initiation from Madhavendra Puri. Madhavendra Puri also initiated Advaita Acharya, and some accounts say they were both initiated at the same time. So, in the tradition's own understanding, Pundarika Vidyanidhi was almost like a godbrother of Mahaprabhu's own guru. This is one reason Krishnadasa Kaviraja shows him such special respect in the Chaitanya-charitamrita.

Called Father Before They Had Even Met #

While Pundarika Vidyanidhi was still living between Chittagong and Nabadwip, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was already calling out for him in the assembly of devotees, weeping and asking when He would see His father again. The devotees who had never met the man learned who he was only from Mahaprabhu's own description of him. Kavi Karnapura's Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika gives the reason. Verse 54 says who Pundarika Vidyanidhi was in Vraja, and verse 55 says why Mahaprabhu called him father:

vṛṣabhānutayā khyātaḥ purā yo vraja-maṇḍale
adhunā puṇḍarīkākṣo vidyānidhi mahāśayaḥ

"The same person who was formerly known as Maharaja Vrsabhanu in the district of Vraja, appeared in Lord Caitanya's pastimes as the great personality Pundarika Vidyanidhi." (Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika 54)

svakīya bhāvam āsādya rādhā viraha kātaraḥ
caitanyaḥ puṇḍarīkāhvaye tātāvadat svayam

"When He was afflicted by the feelings of Srimati Radharani's intense love in separation from Lord Krsna, Lord Caitanya would address Pundarika Vidyanidhi using the word "father"." (Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika 55)

Srila Prabhupada sums this up in his purport to Chaitanya-charitamrita Adi 10.14: "In the Gaura-gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā (54), Śrīla Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi is described as the father of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī in kṛṣṇa-līlā. Caitanya Mahāprabhu therefore treated him as His father."

Guru to Gadadhara Pandit #

Pundarika Vidyanidhi's best-known role in the Chaitanya-lila is as the diksha-guru of Sri Gadadhara Pandit, Mahaprabhu's own constant companion at Jagannatha Puri. The initiation did not come easily. At first Gadadhara mistook the wealthy householder for an ordinary materialist. It took a single verse of the Bhagavatam, recited by Mukunda Datta, to show Gadadhara both his offense and his mistake. That story is told in full on Initiating Gadadhara Pandit, along with a second initiation Pundarika Vidyanidhi gave Gadadhara years later at Puri. Friend of Svarupa Damodara at Puri #

In his later years Pundarika Vidyanidhi settled at Jagannatha Puri. The Chaitanya-charitamrita describes him there as fully equal, when they spoke about Krishna, to Svarupa Damodara Goswami, Mahaprabhu's closest literary associate at Puri. Disappearance and Legacy #

No source records the year of Pundarika Vidyanidhi's disappearance. Traditional accounts place his samadhi among the 64 Samadhis at Radha-kunda in Vrindavana, alongside those of many of Mahaprabhu's other close associates. But the Chaitanya-charitamrita itself lists him among the great devotees who, so far as any record shows, never visited Vrindavana in this life at all. The others it names with him are Haridasa Thakura, Srivasa Thakura, Shivananda Sena, Ramananda Raya and Gadadhara Pandit. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura noted that descendants of Pundarika Vidyanidhi's family were still living in his own lifetime. One of them was a resident of Vrindavana named Sarojananda Gosvami. The old shripat at Mekhala survives today as a place of pilgrimage. It is cared for by ISKCON devotees and known as Pundarika Dham. It stands as proof that the branch Krishnadasa Kaviraja called the third great branch of the Chaitanya tree did not wither.
