Srila Pundarika Vidyanidhi

Srila Pundarika Vidyanidhi is one of the more startling figures among Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's associates: a rich man who lived in open luxury, and at the same time a soul so absorbed in love of Krishna that Mahaprabhu called him father and wept for him before the two had even met. Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami names him the third great branch of the Chaitanya tree, and Kavi Karnapura's Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika identifies him as Vrishabhanu Maharaja, the father of Srimati Radharani, in Krishna's Vraja pastimes.

Family and Native Place #

Pundarika Vidyanidhi's people were Varendra brahmanas whose ancestral home lay in a village called Baghiya near Dhaka, though the family had long since settled at Mekhala, a village near Hathazari in the Chittagong district of what is now Bangladesh. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who traced the family in his Anubhashya to the Chaitanya-charitamrita, records that it had been at odds with another group of brahmanas, the Radhiya, in one of the periodic disputes between the two communities, and had for a time lost the social standing its learning deserved. His father is named Baneshvara — a supposed descendant of one Sivarama Gangopadhyaya — or, in another account, Shuklambara Brahmachari; his mother was Gangadevi. He was born on Vasanta-panchami, the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Magha, at Chakrashala. His wife, Ratnavati, is identified in the same Vraja scheme as Kirtida, the mother of Srimati Radharani — so that husband and wife together carry the identities of Radharani's parents.

What Vidyanidhi Means #

The name is a plain Sanskrit compound — vidya, learning, and nidhi, a treasure or reservoir — a treasure-house of learning. It was not an honorific bestowed for piety; Pundarika Vidyanidhi was a genuine zamindar, a landowner of real wealth at Chakrashala, with homes in both Chittagong and Nabadwip and a scholarly reputation to match his fortune. Later, after the episode described on Initiating Gadadhara Pandit, Mahaprabhu gave him the further title Premanidhi, treasure-house of divine love — and his own associates came to call him Acharyanidhi besides — but the wealth itself was never a pose he adopted for the pastime. He lived exactly as rich as he appeared to be. What no one could see from the outside was that the richness of his heart ran deeper still.

Disciple of Madhavendra Puri #

According to the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika and the older hagiographical digest Prema-vilasa, Pundarika Vidyanidhi took initiation from Madhavendra Puri, the same guru who initiated Advaita Acharya — by some accounts at the very same time. This placed him, in the tradition's own reckoning, in a position close to a godbrother of Mahaprabhu's own guru, and it is one reason Krishnadasa Kaviraja gives him such particular respect in the Chaitanya-charitamrita.

Called Father Before They Had Even Met #

While Pundarika Vidyanidhi was still living between Chittagong and Nabadwip, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was already calling out for him in the assembly of devotees, weeping and asking when He would see His father again. The devotees who had never met the man learned who he was only from Mahaprabhu's own description of him. Guru to Gadadhara Pandit #

Pundarika Vidyanidhi's best-known role in the Chaitanya-lila is as the diksha-guru of Sri Gadadhara Pandit, Mahaprabhu's own constant companion at Jagannatha Puri. The initiation did not come easily — Gadadhara at first mistook the wealthy householder for an ordinary materialist, and it took a single verse of the Bhagavatam, recited by Mukunda Datta, to expose the offense and the mistake together. Friend of Svarupa Damodara at Puri #

In his later years Pundarika Vidyanidhi settled at Jagannatha Puri, where the Chaitanya-charitamrita describes him as being on exactly the same footing, in conversations about Krishna, as Svarupa Damodara Goswami — Mahaprabhu's closest literary associate at Puri. Disappearance and Legacy #

No source records the year of Pundarika Vidyanidhi's disappearance. Traditional accounts place his samadhi among the 64 Samadhis at Radha-kunda in Vrindavana, alongside those of many of Mahaprabhu's other intimate associates — though the Chaitanya-charitamrita itself lists him, together with Haridasa Thakura, Srivasa Thakura, Shivananda Sena, Ramananda Raya and Gadadhara Pandit, among the eminent devotees who, so far as any record shows, never visited Vrindavana in this life at all. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura noted that descendants of his family were still living in his own lifetime, one of them a resident of Vrindavana named Sarojananda Gosvami. The old shripat at Mekhala survives today as a place of pilgrimage, cared for by ISKCON devotees and known as Pundarika Dham — proof, in brick and soil, that the branch Krishnadasa Kaviraja called the third great branch of the Chaitanya tree did not wither.
