Srila Mukunda Datta

Sri Mukunda Datta was one of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's earliest friends in Navadvipa, His classmate before either of them had any public reputation for holiness, and — by the Lord's own account — the singer whose kirtana moved Him more than almost anyone else's. He came from a family of physicians in Chittagong, in the far east of Bengal, and it was he who, seeing a doubt that no one else in Navadvipa even knew to have, took Gadadhara Pandit to meet Pundarika Vidyanidhi and so set in motion one of the tradition's best-loved stories of misjudgment corrected.

A Physician's Family from Chittagong #

Mukunda Datta's people were physicians from Chittagong, far to the east of Navadvipa, and his elder brother was Vasudeva Datta — a devotee Mahaprabhu would later praise so extravagantly that He vowed, three times over, that His own body existed only to please him. The two brothers moved to Navadvipa to study, as many families from Chittagong did in that generation, and it was there, at Gangadasa Pandita's tol, that the younger brother found himself seated among the same students as a brilliant, restless boy named Nimai Pandit — the future Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata remembers the two of them arguing constantly, Nimai using tricks of logic to defeat Mukunda in debate after debate, until Mukunda privately concluded that no ordinary human being could possibly know as much as his classmate did. Mahaprabhu's Classmate and Favorite Singer #

Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami counts Mukunda Datta among the branches of the Chaitanya tree in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, naming him directly as the Lord's class friend and adding a detail found nowhere else in that long list: Lord Chaitanya danced simply because Mukunda sang. Even before that — the very day Mahaprabhu returned from Gaya newly initiated and drowning in divine love — it was Mukunda's recitation of Bhagavatam verses that gave Him comfort. That gift placed him at the center of Navadvipa's sankirtana in its earliest years — leading kirtana at Srivasa Pandita's courtyard, opening the twenty-one-hour ecstatic outpouring known as sata-prahariya, and starting the first song the night Advaita Acharya's circle watched Mahaprabhu dance dressed as the goddess of fortune. An Offense Forgiven Without Limit #

Mukunda's affection for Mahaprabhu never quite settled his restless intellectual habits — he kept company with Mayavadi philosophers even while praising bhakti to devotees, and during the Lord's maha-prakasha-lila at Srivasa Angana this cost him dearly: while every other devotee was called inside and blessed, Mukunda was left standing at the door. What followed — a vow to give up his own body, a sentence of ten million future births, and a mercy that erased the sentence before he had even finished rejoicing at it — is one of the most striking stories told about any of Mahaprabhu's associates, and it is told in full on the offense to Bhakti-devi.

The Introduction That Changed Gadadhara Pandit's Life #

Mukunda alone among the devotees of Navadvipa had known Pundarika Vidyanidhi back in Chittagong, and he alone understood that the man's appearance of wealth and sense-enjoyment concealed a devotion so deep that Mahaprabhu Himself called him "father." When young Gadadhara Pandit judged Pundarika by his opulent bed and jeweled betel-box, it was Mukunda who saw the doubt on his face and recited a single verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam to answer it. That verse broke Pundarika Vidyanidhi's disguise instantly and led, within the same episode, to Gadadhara's initiation. Sannyasa, Jagannatha Puri, and Disappearance #

When Mahaprabhu's desire to take sannyasa could no longer be contained, He went first to Mukunda Datta's own house, and it was Mukunda who begged Him to continue sankirtana a few days more. That plea failed, but Mukunda was one of the very few devotees present at Katwa for the sannyasa itself, and one of three named as having "done everything" needed for it. He accompanied the Lord toward Jagannatha Puri, was present when Nityananda Prabhu broke Mahaprabhu's sannyasa staff at Jaleshvara, and for the rest of his life traveled from Bengal to Puri every year to see Him. These Puri years, and Mukunda's traditional disappearance day on the full moon of Jyeshtha — the very day of Snana Yatra — are told on sannyasa and the years at Jagannatha Puri and disappearance and legacy.

Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika identifies Mukunda, in Krishna's own pastimes, as Madhukantha — one of two singers of Vraja, the other being his own brother Vasudeva as Madhuvrata. It is a fitting identity for a devotee remembered, above almost anything else he did, for a voice that could make even Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu dance.
