Srila Raghunandana Thakura

Srila Raghunandana Thakura belonged to one devotional family at Srikhanda, a village near Katwa in Bengal that Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami names, in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, among the great branches of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own tree of mercy. His father was Mukunda Dasa, a royal physician of deep hidden devotion; his uncle was Narahari Sarakara Thakura, the guru of Lochana Dasa Thakura. Raghunandana himself is remembered above all for a single, simple thing: as a small child he fed the family Deity of Gopinatha with such open-hearted insistence that the Lord ate the offering before his eyes, a devotion so pure that Mahaprabhu declared the son to be, in truth, the father.

Birth Into a Devotee Family at Srikhanda #

According to Srila Prabhupada's purport to Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila 10.78-79, Mukunda Dasa was the eldest son of one Narayana Dasa, and the elder brother of Narahari Sarakara Thakura; a second brother, Madhava Dasa, is named in the same family. Mukunda Dasa's own son was Raghunandana. Traditional Gaudiya accounts add that Raghunandana was born around 1510 AD, in the Shaka year 1432, and that his uncle Narahari took special interest and much personal affection in raising him. Growing up in a village whose devotees Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Himself would later single out by name, Raghunandana was surrounded from infancy by the Srikhanda circle described more fully on The Srikhanda Circle and Kheturi - the same circle whose fuller Srikhanda context is also told from another angle on Lochana Dasa Thakura's page, Discipleship Under Narahari Sarkara Thakura.

One clarification is worth making plainly, since the names are easily confused. Some later summaries have described Raghunandana's father as Yadunandana Acharya - but that is a mistake. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita is explicit that Raghunandana's father was Mukunda Dasa. The Yadunandana Acharya of Gaudiya history is a different person altogether: the family priest who, according to this site's own biography of Raghunatha Dasa Goswami, engineered that Goswami's escape to Puri and served as his diksha-guru. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita itself lists a Sri Yadunandana as a separate branch of the tree, distinct from Raghunandana of Srikhanda (Adi 10.119) - two different Vaishnavas who happen to share a name, not one person under two labels. The Child Who Fed the Lord #

Raghunandana's name is remembered above all for one episode from his own boyhood. Left in charge of the family's Gopinatha Deity while his father Mukunda Dasa was away, the small child took his father's instruction to "make sure the Deity eats" entirely at face value, and simply insisted, with tears when the food seemed untouched, that Gopinatha eat before him. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita records, in Mahaprabhu's own words, that Raghunandana's whole nature was to serve Krishna and nothing else, and the fuller pastime - the offered laddu, Mukunda's astonishment, and Mahaprabhu's declaration that this child was in truth his father's own spiritual master - is told in full on The Boy Who Fed Sri Gopinatha. That page also carries the moment Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu assigned three Srikhanda brothers three distinct duties: Mukunda to earn wealth honestly, Narahari to remain always among devotees, and Raghunandana simply to serve the Deity - a division Mahaprabhu Himself said was, at heart, no division at all.

Among the Devotees of Srikhanda and Puri #

Raghunandana was not a solitary figure. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita places him, his father, and his uncle together on the road to Advaita Acharya's house each year, joining the annual journey to Jagannatha Puri for chaturmasya, and at the Ratha-yatra festival itself he is described dancing beside Narahari in the sankirtana party formed by the residents of Srikhanda. He is also remembered as present at the great festival Narottama Dasa Thakura organized at Kheturi, arriving from Srikhanda together with his uncle - a detail this site's own account of that festival, The Kheturi Festival, records in the same words. Years later, when Jahnava Mata made her own return journey from Vraja through Bengal, her route passed deliberately through Srikhanda, remembered on her own page simply as "home of Raghunandana Thakura." Disappearance and What Remained #

As his own end approached, Raghunandana is remembered comforting Shrinivasa Acharya with the promise that Gauranga's mercy would carry devotion through even the most doubt-filled age, quoting his uncle Narahari's own verses on the subject. He passed from this world on Shukla Chaturthi in the month of Shravana - the exact year is not given in the sources consulted for this page - leaving his Deity service to his son, Kanai Thakura, whose own descendants are recorded still living at Srikhanda generations later. The Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika identifies him as Pradyumna among the four original expansions; sources differ on the more specific vraja-lila identity beneath that (see Disappearance and Legacy for both versions). No song by Raghunandana Thakura appears in this site's own Vaishnava Song Book database, and none was found attributed to him in the sources consulted for this page; the songs describing his childhood devotion that do survive, such as the one by Uddhava Dasa quoted on The Boy Who Fed Sri Gopinatha, were written by others in his praise, not by him.
