Srila Bhugarbha Goswami
Lokanatha Gosvami's Lifelong Companion in Vrindavana
अन्य नाम Bhugarbha Gosvami, Bhugarbha Goswami, Bhugarbha Gosani, Bhugarbha Prabhu, Bhugarbha Thakura
“Even for half a moment I did not worship the lotus feet of Svarupa Damodara, Sanatana, Rupa, Raghunatha Bhatta, Raghunatha dasa, Gopala Bhatta, Bhugarbha, Jiva, and Lokanatha Gosvami. How will it be possible for me to attain my desire?”
Narottama Dasa Thakura, Prarthana, Dainya-bodhika ("The Author Describes His Fallen Condition"), Song 3, verse 2 — naming Bhugarbha Goswami among the Vraja Goswamis he laments never having served
Srila Bhugarbha Goswami is remembered less as a figure in his own right than as one half of an inseparable pair. Alongside his lifelong companion Lokanatha Gosvami, he was among the very first Gaudiya Vaishnavas to settle in Vrindavana, arriving years before Rupa Goswami and Sanatana Goswami took up residence there. A disciple of Gadadhara Pandit, he is named directly, if briefly, in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita itself — one of the few Vrindavana Goswamis whom Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami mentions by name in his own account of events he personally witnessed.

A Disciple of Gadadhara Pandit #
Every source agrees that Bhugarbha Goswami took initiation from Gadadhara Pandit, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own intimate associate and, in the sampradaya's understanding, the shelter of Srimati Radharani's mood. That single fact places Bhugarbha only one step removed from Mahaprabhu's own household of associates, and Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami counts him among Gadadhara Pandit's own line of disciples in the genealogical chapters of Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita (see below). His very name is said to describe his practice rather than his birth: *bhu* means earth, and *garbha* means womb or hidden cave, and tradition holds that he sought out underground or enclosed places for his bhajana so that nothing outward could distract him from remembering Krishna. A later verse of praise in the Shakha-nirnayamrita, a genealogical text of the sampradaya, calls him a devotee "born from the earth's own womb," compassionate, simple, always joyful, and delighted specifically in service connected to Sri Govindadeva — a detail that matches what little else is known of his disciples' own lives (see below).
Bound to Lokanatha Gosvami #
Exactly how Bhugarbha Goswami was related to Lokanatha Gosvami is one of the few genuine points of disagreement in his record. The Sadhana-dipika calls him Lokanatha's paternal uncle; other accounts, including the oldest surviving biographical note on him, simply call the two "dear friends" without claiming any blood tie. What no source disputes is the closeness itself: the Bhakti-ratnakara of Narahari Chakravarti Thakura says plainly that "Lokanatha's affection for Bhugarbha was well known everywhere — they only had different bodies; in spirit they were one." When Lokanatha Gosvami received Mahaprabhu's own instruction, at Nabadwipa, to go and settle in Vrindavana, Bhugarbha chose to walk that same road at his side rather than let him go alone (see Walking to Vraja with Lokanatha Gosvami for the journey itself). The two of them reached Vraja and began their bhajana there years before Rupa Goswami and Sanatana Goswami arrived to join them, which is why later tradition remembers Bhugarbha and Lokanatha as senior in age and experience to several of the Goswamis who eventually became far better known than either of them.
Named in the Chaitanya-charitamrita #
Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami's genealogical survey of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's associates, in the tenth and twelfth chapters of Adi-lila, traces each principal devotee's own further disciples as a "branch" of the Lord's tree of devotees. There Bhugarbha appears directly: "The eleventh branch of Gadadhara Gosvami was Bhugarbha Gosani, and the twelfth was Bhagavata dasa. Both of them went to Vrindavana and resided there for life" (Adi-lila 12.82). He surfaces again, later in the text, among the party that accompanied an aging Rupa Goswami to see the Gopala Deity when the Deity came to stay for a month at Mathura rather than make Rupa Goswami walk the distance to Govardhan (Madhya-lila 18.50) — a specific, datable moment in Vraja's devotional life that this site tells in full at Named at Gopala's Darshan in Mathura. Jiva Goswami is named in the very same verse. Bhugarbha Goswami is not counted among the formal group later called the Six Goswamis, but Narottama Dasa Thakura, in one of his best-known prayers of self-reproach, lists him in the same breath as Sanatana Goswami, Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami, Raghunatha Dasa Goswami, Gopala Bhatta Goswami, Jiva Goswami and Lokanatha Gosvami as one of the great souls of Vraja whose feet he regrets never having served (see the quote below).
Disciples and the Service of Govindadeva #
Little is recorded of Bhugarbha Goswami's own disciples beyond their names, but one detail stands out: among them was Chaitanya Dasa, who served as pujari of Sri Govindadeva, the celebrated Deity of Vrindavana whose original temple was built in the following generation. Two further disciples, Mukundananda Chakravarti and Premi Krishnadasa, are named alongside him but otherwise unrecorded. Read together with the Shakha-nirnayamrita's description of Bhugarbha himself taking pleasure in Govindadeva's service, and with the tradition that he and Lokanatha Gosvami spent their early years in Vraja trying to recover the lost and overgrown sites connected to Radha-Govindaji before Rupa and Sanatana Goswami's more systematic work began, a consistent picture emerges of a devotee whose own attachment to that particular Deity's service carried forward into the generation he initiated (see Calling Out the Names of the Twelve Forests for that early work).
Legacy at Radha-Damodara #
The Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika of Kavi Karnapura identifies Bhugarbha Goswami's eternal identity, in Krishna's ever-existing pastimes, as the gopi Prema-manjari. He passed from this world in Vrindavana on the Chaturdashi, the fourteenth day, of the Kartika full-moon fortnight; no source records the year. His samadhi stands today in the courtyard of the Radha-Damodara temple, close to Rupa Goswami's own, alongside those of Jiva Goswami and Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami — a detail repeated consistently across ISKCON and Gaudiya Math sources, though Wikipedia's own short list of that courtyard's samadhis does not name him individually, which says more about how thin the independently documented record of his life is than about any real dispute over where he is buried. That thinness is itself worth stating plainly: almost everything known about Bhugarbha Goswami comes down to a handful of verses naming him alongside Lokanatha Gosvami, a lineage note in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, and the fact of a courtyard samadhi. It is a record of a life lived, by every account, without any interest in being separately remembered.

The eleventh branch of Gadadhara Gosvami was Bhugarbha Gosani, and the twelfth was Bhagavata dasa. Both of them went to Vrindavana and resided there for life.
Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami's own genealogical listing of Gadadhara Pandit's disciples, placing Bhugarbha Goswami as the eleventh of them and confirming, in the primary source itself, that he settled permanently in Vrindavana.
Lokanatha's affection for Bhugarbha was well known everywhere. They only had different bodies; in spirit they were one.
Narahari Chakravarti Thakura's own description of the closeness between Bhugarbha Goswami and Lokanatha Gosvami, quoted in secondary Gaudiya Vaishnava biographical sources rather than independently verified against a critical edition of the Bengali text.
Gopal Bhatta Gosvami was extremely compassionate. Bhugarbha Gosvami and Lokanatha Gosvami are a goldmine of virtues.
A further verse of praise for Bhugarbha Goswami from the Bhakti-ratnakara, again paired with Lokanatha Gosvami and here also naming Gopala Bhatta Goswami; quoted in secondary sources rather than independently checked against a critical edition.

I offer my reverence to the illustrious Bhugarbha Prabhu, who is said to have been born from the bowels of the earth. He bestows love of Krishna; he takes pleasure in the service of Govinda Deva, is compassionate, simple and always joyful.
A genealogical praise-verse explaining the traditional etymology of the name Bhugarbha (earth-womb) and explicitly linking him to the service of Sri Govindadeva, consistent with the tradition that one of his own disciples served as Govindadeva's pujari.
