Parameshvara Dasa Thakura

Parameshvara Dasa Thakura appears in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita as one of the twelve gopalas, a group of intimate associates bound not primarily to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu but to Nityananda Prabhu - devotees whom Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami describes as sharing a cowherd-boy's mood of pure, unreserved friendship. He is remembered chiefly for two things: an identity in the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika going back to Krishna's own Vraja pastimes, and a long life of practical service - first to Nityananda Prabhu directly, and after Nityananda's disappearance, to Nityananda's wife Jahnava Devi, under whose order he installed the Deities still worshiped today at his shripat in Atapur. He should not be confused with Parameshvara Modaka, a Nadia confectioner who fed the boy Chaitanya sweets and later met Him at Jagannatha Puri - a different man of a different generation and role, who happens to share only the name.

The Fifth Gopala, Named Arjuna in Vraja #

Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita names Parameshvara Dasa in its eleventh chapter of Adi-lila, a chapter devoted entirely to Nityananda Prabhu's own circle of associates: "Parameshvara dasa, said to be the fifth gopala of krishna-lila, completely surrendered to the lotus feet of Nityananda. Anyone who remembers his name, Parameshvara dasa, will get love of Krishna very easily." Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's Anubhasya, quoting the Chaitanya-bhagavata, adds a striking description: Parameshvara Dasa "was the life and soul of Sri Nityananda Prabhu. The body of Parameshvara dasa was the place of Lord Nityananda's pastimes." Kavi Karnapura's Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika, the tradition's standard reference for matching Chaitanya-era devotees to their identities in Krishna's Vraja pastimes, names him directly: the cowherd friend Arjuna, who played with Krishna and Balarama, reappeared in this life as Parameshvara Dasa. Two other gopalas from this same list are already documented on this site - Uddharana Datta Thakura and Gauridasa Pandita - each carrying his own separate Vraja identity and his own separate life of service.

One genuine point of overlap is worth noting honestly: the same Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika, only a few verses earlier, identifies a different Vraja cowherd also named Arjuna - distinct from the epic hero Arjuna, but sharing his name - as a component of the identity of Ramananda Raya. Two separate Chaitanya-era devotees are thus each linked to a Vraja companion called Arjuna in the same text. This site records both identifications as the source states them, rather than resolving an overlap that the source itself does not explain.

Companion of Nityananda Prabhu at Khadadaha #

Before any of his later service is recorded, Parameshvara Dasa is remembered simply as living for a time at Khadadaha village, "always filled with the ecstasy of a cowherd boy" - the same mood, sources say, that marked his life throughout, whether at Nityananda Prabhu's side or afterward in the Atapur temple he built. In the Service of Jahnava Devi #

After Nityananda Prabhu's disappearance, Parameshvara Dasa continued his service under Jahnava Mata, Nityananda's wife, who came to lead a large section of the Gaudiya Vaishnava community from Khardaha. He accompanied her to the great festival at Kheturi, and later escorted a Deity of Radharani that she sent to Vrindavana for Sri Govindaji. It was also by her direct order that he installed Sri Sri Radha-Gopinatha in a temple of his own founding at Atapur, in Hugli district - the shripat that carries his name to this day, and the subject of the-shripat-at-atapur.

What Remains Honestly Uncertain #

No source consulted for this page gives Parameshvara Dasa Thakura a birth year, and his disappearance is dated only by the recurring festival day - the full moon of Vaishakha - rather than by any specific year. A widely repeated story of his reviving a dead animal during nama-sankirtan at Akna Mahesh appears in gaudiyahistory.iskcondesiretree.com's biographical account but is not found in Chaitanya-charitamrita, the Anubhasya purport, or any other primary source checked here; it is reported on his shripat page as devotional tradition, not as scripture. And as already noted, the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika's use of the name Arjuna for two separate identifications - his own, and part of Ramananda Raya's - is left exactly as the source presents it, without an invented resolution.
