Gaura Purnima 1486 — a lunar eclipse, a town already chanting, and the golden child born on the bank of the Ganges

The family into which Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born had come to Nabadwip from elsewhere. His grandfather Upendra Mishra was a learned brahmana of the Srihatta district in eastern Bengal — modern Sylhet — and it was his son Jagannatha Mishra who travelled west to Nabadwip, then the most celebrated seat of Sanskrit learning in Bengal, to continue his studies. There he studied under the astronomer and scholar Nilambara Chakravarti, and there he married Nilambara's daughter, Sachi Devi. The couple settled on the bank of the Ganges in the quarter now known as Sridhama Mayapur, and lived in the modest circumstances of a learned but poor brahmana household.
Their married life was marked by repeated grief. Vaishnava biographers record that eight daughters were born to Sachi Devi before any child survived infancy; each died shortly after birth. The first son to live was Vishvarupa, a boy of extraordinary beauty and gravity who would later leave home to accept the renounced order while still young. Then, after a long interval, Sachi Devi conceived again — and the biographies describe Jagannatha Mishra and his wife receiving intimations, through dreams and through the remarks of visiting astrologers, that this child would be different from any that had come before.
The birth took place on the evening of the full moon of the Bengali month of Phalguna, in the year 1407 of the Saka era — the eighteenth of February, 1486, by the Western calendar. What has fixed the moment in Vaishnava memory is the coincidence that attended it. That evening there was a total lunar eclipse, and by immemorial custom Hindus bathe in a sacred river during an eclipse and chant the names of God for purification. The whole of Nabadwip was therefore standing in the Ganges, calling out the holy names of Krishna, at the precise hour that the child was born a few yards away on its bank. The tradition regards this as no accident at all but as the first and most economical statement of what He had come to do: a town chanting in unison, without being asked, at the moment the Lord of the sankirtana movement entered the world.
Nilambara Chakravarti, His maternal grandfather and a respected astrologer, drew up the child's horoscope. Reading it, he is said to have declared that this boy would become a teacher of unparalleled greatness, that His name would be honoured across the world, and that He would deliver innumerable souls. He gave Him the name Vishvambhara — "he who maintains the entire universe" — a name that Vaishnavas take as a quiet acknowledgement, on the grandfather's part, of rather more than the usual grandparental hope. Because a nimba tree stood beside the house where He was born, the neighbourhood women gave Him the household name by which the whole of Nabadwip would know Him for the next twenty-four years: Nimai. His golden complexion, unusual and much remarked upon, produced the other names He carried through life — Gaurahari, Gauranga, Gaura, all built on the Sanskrit word for gold.
Gaudiya Vaishnava theology does not treat this birth as the arrival of an unusually gifted religious teacher who was later recognised as divine. It holds that Krishna Himself descended, and that He did so in a particular and deliberate way: not in His own original form and dark complexion, but taking on the golden complexion and, more importantly, the interior emotional life of His own greatest devotee, Srimati Radharani. The reasoning given in the Chaitanya-charitamrita is that Krishna wished to taste for Himself the sweetness of the love that Radharani feels for Him — an experience structurally unavailable to Him as the object of that love — and simultaneously to distribute that love freely to everyone, which He had not done in His previous descent. The verses in which this is set out are gathered below.
There is a further strand in the tradition worth recording, because it is dear to Bengali Vaishnavas. Advaita Acharya, an elderly and greatly respected Vaishnava of Shantipura, had for years been distressed at the irreligion of the age and had worshipped Krishna with Ganges water and tulasi leaves, calling on Him with great intensity to descend and rescue the people of Kali-yuga. Vaishnavas hold that it was in answer to Advaita Acharya's appeal that the Lord consented to appear, and that this is why Advaita Acharya — though far older than Mahaprabhu in years — is counted among the Panca-tattva as one of the five features of the Lord's own descent.
The house at Mayapur where the birth took place is today marked by the temple known as Yogapith, and remains one of the principal places of pilgrimage in the Gaudiya Vaishnava world. The anniversary of the day, Gaura Purnima, is the most important festival in the Gaudiya calendar, kept with fasting until moonrise, with the reading of His pastimes, and — as is only appropriate — with sankirtana.

Word for word
kṛṣṇa-varṇam — repeating the syllables kṛṣ-ṇa; tviṣā — with a luster; akṛṣṇam — not black (golden); sa-aṅga — along with associates; upa-aṅga — servitors; astra — weapons; pārṣadam — confidential companions; yajñaiḥ — by sacrifice; saṅkīrtana-prāyaiḥ — consisting chiefly of congregational chanting; yajanti — they worship; hi — certainly; su-medhasaḥ — intelligent persons.
In the Age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Kṛṣṇa. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Kṛṣṇa Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions.
From the purport: Purport excerpt: “Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī has explained this verse in his commentary on the Bhāgavatam known as the Krama-sandarbha, wherein he says that Lord Kṛṣṇa also appears with a golden complexion. That golden Lord Kṛṣṇa is Lord Caitanya, who is worshiped by intelligent men in this age.”

ittham — in this way; nṛ — like a human being (such as Lord Kṛṣṇa and Lord Rāmacandra); tiryak — like animals (such as the boar); ṛṣi — as a great saint (Paraśurāma); deva — as demigods; jhaṣa — as an aquatic (such as the fish and tortoise); avatāraiḥ — by such different incarnations; lokān — all the different planetary systems; vibhāvayasi — You protect; haṁsi — You (sometimes) kill; jagat pratīpān — persons who have simply created trouble in this world; dharmam — the principles of religion; mahā-puruṣa — O great personality; pāsi — You protect; yuga-anuvṛttam — according to the different millenniums; channaḥ — covered; kalau — in the Age of Kali; yat — since; abhavaḥ — have been (and will be in the future); tri-yugaḥ — named Triyuga; atha — therefore; saḥ — the same personality; tvam — You.
In this way, my Lord, You appear in various incarnations as a human being, an animal, a great saint, a demigod, a fish or a tortoise, thus maintaining the entire creation in different planetary systems and killing the demoniac principles. According to the age, O my Lord, You protect the principles of religion. In the Age of Kali, however, You do not assert Yourself as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and therefore You are known as Triyuga, or the Lord who appears in three yugas.
From the purport: Purport excerpt: “In all the yugas but Kali-yuga, the Lord appears in various incarnations and asserts Himself as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but although Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who appears in Kali-yuga, is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He never asserted Himself as such.”

Establishes the principle that a teacher of bhakti must practise it, explaining why Krishna comes as a devotee.

anarpita — not bestowed; carīm — having been formerly; cirāt — for a long time; karuṇayā — by causeless mercy; avatīrṇaḥ — descended; kalau — in the Age of Kali; samarpayitum — to bestow; unnata — elevated; ujjvala-rasām — the conjugal mellow; sva-bhakti — of His own service; śriyam — the treasure; hariḥ — the Supreme Lord; puraṭa — than gold; sundara — more beautiful; dyuti — of splendor; kadamba — with a multitude; sandīpitaḥ — lighted up; sadā — always; hṛdaya-kandare — in the cavity of the heart; sphuratu — let Him be manifest; vaḥ — your; śacī-nandanaḥ — the son of mother Śacī.
May the Supreme Lord who is known as the son of Śrīmatī Śacī-devī be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has appeared in the Age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation has ever offered before: the most sublime and radiant mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love.

The loving affairs of Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are transcendental manifestations of the Lord’s internal pleasure-giving potency. Although Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are one in Their identity, previously They separated Themselves. Now these two transcendental identities have again united, in the form of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya. I bow down to Him, who has manifested Himself with the sentiment and complexion of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī although He is Kṛṣṇa Himself.

Desiring to understand the glory of Rādhārāṇī’s love, the wonderful qualities in Him that She alone relishes through Her love, and the happiness She feels when She realizes the sweetness of His love, the Supreme Lord Hari, richly endowed with Her emotions, appeared from the womb of Śrīmatī Śacī-devī, as the moon appeared from the ocean.
States the three internal desires of Krishna that caused Him to appear as the son of Saci.

The Lord’s desire to appear was born from two reasons: the Lord wanted to taste the sweet essence of the mellows of love of God, and He wanted to propagate devotional service in the world on the platform of spontaneous attraction. Thus He is known as supremely jubilant and as the most merciful of all.

Word for word
prema-bhakti — devotional service in love of Godhead; śikhāite — to teach; āpane — Himself; avatari — descending; rādhā-bhāva — the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī; kānti — and luster; dui — two; aṅgīkāra kari’ — accepting; śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya — of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu; rūpe — in the form; kaila — made; avatāra — incarnation; ei — this; ta’ — certainly; pañcama — fifth; ślokera — of the verse; artha — meaning; paracāra — proclamation.
To promulgate prema-bhakti [devotional service in love of Godhead], Kṛṣṇa appeared as Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya with the mood and complexion of Śrī Rādhā. Thus I have explained the meaning of the fifth verse.
sva-mādhurya — His own conjugal love; rādhā-prema-rasa — the mellow of the loving affairs between Rādhārāṇī and Kṛṣṇa; āsvādite — to taste; rādhā-bhāva — the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī; aṅgī kariyāche — He accepted; bhāla-mate — very well.
To taste the mellows of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī’s loving affairs in Her relationship with Kṛṣṇa, and to understand the reservoir of pleasure in Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Himself, as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, accepted the mood of Rādhārāṇī.
