Srila Uddhava Dasa

Two much more famous people share this name, and neither of them is the subject of this page. Krishna's own dear friend and cousin Uddhava, the counselor of the Srimad-Bhagavatam's Dvaraka-lila and the recipient of the celebrated Uddhava-gita, belongs to an entirely different part of Vaishnava literature. And on this very site, the already-published life of Srila Paramananda Puri identifies him, by the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika's own testimony, as that very Uddhava come again at Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's side. The Uddhava Dasa described here is someone else again: an ordinary Gaudiya Vaishnava devotee of Vrindavana, named directly in Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami's Chaitanya-charitamrita, whose life left only a handful of lines in the historical record.

Not Krishna's Uddhava, and Not Paramananda Puri #

The confusion is worth heading off directly, because all three names sit close together in Gaudiya Vaishnava literature. Krishna's Uddhava is a full personality of the Bhagavatam itself - the wisest of the Yadus, the friend Krishna chose to receive His final instructions before leaving this world. Paramananda Puri is a historical sannyasi of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own generation, already treated on this site, whom the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika (verse 118) identifies as that same Uddhava returned to Gaura's side. Uddhava Dasa - the plain, ordinary devotee this page is about - is neither of these. He never appears in the Bhagavatam, and the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika's identification of him, at verse 192, is a wholly different one: an avesha incarnation, tradition says, of the Moon-god, not of Krishna's own cousin and counselor. What survives of his actual life comes not from any account of Dvaraka or of Mahaprabhu's Puri years, but from two brief, specific mentions in the record of Vrindavana in the generation after the Six Goswamis settled there.

A Branch of Gadadhara Pandit's Family #

Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita builds much of its account of Mahaprabhu's community around the image of a great tree, with Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita Acharya and Gadadhara Pandit as its three central trunks and their followers as branches and sub-branches spreading out from each. In this scheme, Adi-lila 12.84 names Uddhava Dasa as the sixteenth branch traced to Gadadhara Pandit, alongside Shrinatha Chakravarti, Jitamitra and Kashthakata Jagannatha Dasa. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's Anubhasya, quoted in Srila Prabhupada's own purport to this verse, adds one further detail from an older source, the Shakha-nirnayamrita of Yadunatha Das: "Purport excerpt: Similarly, verse 35 mentions Uddhava dasa as being greatly qualified in distributing love of Godhead to everyone." That same verse 35, in full, reads as a short verse of praise rather than biography - it tells us he was regarded as generous with bhakti toward the most fallen, not where he was born or whom he served as guru. Whether "branch of Gadadhara Pandit" here means formal discipleship or simply a place within Gadadhara Pandit's wider circle of devotion is not spelled out in either source, and this page does not guess further than the texts themselves state.

Present When Rupa Gosvami Saw Gopala at Mathura #

The one fully narratable episode involving Uddhava Dasa comes from later in Chaitanya-charitamrita's Madhya-lila, during Srila Rupa Gosvami's old age. Rupa Gosvami and Sanatana Gosvami had long ago chosen never to climb Govardhana Hill themselves, treating the hill as non-different from Krishna, and it was Rupa Gosvami's advancing age and failing health, not that vow, that finally kept him from Govardhana altogether. Fearing raids by Muslim forces, the Gopala Deity he longed to see was moved to Mathura and kept for a full month in the house of Vitthalanatha, the Vallabha-sampradaya acharya who was the youngest son of Vallabhacharya - a different lineage from Rupa Gosvami's own, whose home simply happened to shelter the Deity that season. There, finally, the old Gosvami had his darshan. The full list of devotees who stayed with him that month, Uddhava Dasa's own name among them, is set out in Seeing Gopala at Vitthalanatha's House.

Host in Vrindavana to Srinivasa and Raghava #

A second and later mention, drawn from Narahari Chakravarti's Bhakti-ratnakara rather than from Chaitanya-charitamrita itself, places Uddhava Dasa still living in Vrindavana when Shrinivasa Acharya and Raghava Goswami passed through on a tour of the Vraja-mandala holy places. He welcomed the two travelers into his own cottage with what the text calls enthusiastic hospitality, and he was later counted among the devotees who gathered to see off Shrinivasa Acharya, Narottama Dasa Thakura and Shyamananda Prabhu as the three set out for Bengal carrying the precious manuscripts entrusted to them by Jiva Gosvami - the same journey told in fuller detail on this site's own Carrying the Scriptures to Bengal. The Vrindavana side of that farewell, from Uddhava Dasa's own cottage, is the subject of Host to Shrinivasa and Raghava in Vrindavana.

Two Devotees Who Share a Name #

Honest reporting here has to include one further complication that the sources themselves raise. The Gaudiya Vaishnava Abhidhana, a later reference compilation of Gaudiya Vaishnava biography, states that there were at least two separate devotees called Uddhava Dasa: one a follower of Sanatana Gosvami who worshipped in Vraja on the bank of Pavana Sarovara, and a second, much later figure - an initiated disciple of Radhamohana Thakura, born Krishnakanta Majumdar, who lived in Murshidabad district and wrote devotional songs about Radha-Krishna's pastimes. Neither Chaitanya-charitamrita nor Bhakti-ratnakara states outright which, if either, of these two later-catalogued men is the same person named in the two episodes above, or whether a third, otherwise unrecorded Uddhava Dasa is meant. This page follows Chaitanya-charitamrita's Vrindavana devotee - the one present at Vitthalanatha's house and at his own cottage door - without forcing a resolution the sources do not themselves offer.
